Self-Care Sunday

🌿 Your Eyes Need Rest Too: Reclaiming Screen-Free Moments

In our always-on world, we’ve grown used to checking notifications before breakfast, scrolling through emails after dinner, and watching “just one more episode” late into the night. But have you stopped to think about how all that screen time might be affecting your eyes?

📱 On average, UK adults spend more than 6 hours a day looking at screens. Over time, this can lead to:

👁️ Digital eye strain (also known as Computer Vision Syndrome)

😵 Headaches and eye fatigue

🌫️ Blurred vision and difficulty focusing

😴 Sleep disruption, due to blue light exposure

This Self-Care Sunday, we invite you to give your eyes the break they truly deserve.

Here are a few gentle, restorative ideas for your evening:
✨ Go for a walk and focus on faraway objects to stretch your visual range
📖 Read a physical book or listen to an audiobook instead of scrolling
🧘‍♀️ Try eye yoga or gentle breathing exercises to relax your eye muscles
🕯️ Create a screen-free wind-down routine an hour before bed—your sleep and your eyes will thank you

👓 Remember: our eyes are always working—tracking, blinking, adjusting, and focusing. Giving them space to rest is just as important as caring for your body or mind.

So tonight, unplug a little earlier and enjoy the real world in high-definition clarity—no filters needed.

Wellness Wednesday:

💊 Did You Know Your Medication Could Be Affecting Your Vision?

When we think about the side effects of medication, most of us focus on things like drowsiness or stomach upset—but very few consider how medications might be impacting their eyes.

Certain prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause changes to your vision. These side effects can be temporary and mild, or in some cases, signal a more serious issue.

Here are just a few examples of how common medications can affect your eyes:
👁️ Antihistamines (for allergies) – Can cause dry eyes and blurry vision
💊 Oral contraceptives – May lead to changes in corneal thickness and dry eye symptoms
🩺 Steroids – Long-term use can increase the risk of cataracts or glaucoma
💉 Diabetes medications or insulin – Can cause blurred vision due to changes in blood sugar levels
💊 Antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds – Sometimes linked to light sensitivity or eye movement disorders
🧠 Medications for Parkinson’s or epilepsy – May cause changes in focus or involuntary eye movements

👉 If you’ve recently started a new medication and have noticed any changes in your sight—like dryness, discomfort, light sensitivity, or blurriness—it’s worth mentioning to both your GP and your optometrist.

👓 During your eye exam, we always review your medication list to understand the full picture of your health. It’s just one of the ways we ensure you receive the most comprehensive care possible.

✨ Your eyes are connected to the rest of your body. That’s why we believe in treating vision as part of your whole-body wellbeing.

Have questions about your current medications and your eyes? We’re here to help.

📅 The One Appointment You Shouldn’t Forget: Your Annual Eye Exam

When was the last time you had your eyes checked? If you can’t remember… it’s probably time to book in!

Annual eye exams are about much more than just checking if you need new glasses. They are a vital part of protecting your overall health. During a routine test, we can detect early signs of a range of conditions—not just eye-related ones like glaucoma or cataracts, but also systemic issues such as:

💉 Diabetes

💓 High blood pressure

🧠 Neurological problems

👁️ Macular degeneration and more

The earlier these conditions are identified, the easier they are to manage—often before you even notice any symptoms.

👓 Plus, your vision needs can change more quickly than you might think. That’s especially true if:

You’ve recently started working more on screens

You drive regularly

You’re over 40 or under 16

You wear contact lenses

You have a family history of eye conditions

✅ Tip of the day: Set a recurring calendar reminder or use your smartphone's health app to log your last exam and alert you when it’s time for your next one. Prevention truly is the best medicine.

Our friendly team is here to make your check-up thorough, reassuring, and even enjoyable!
