We thought we'd take a moment to highlight the late Ven. Geshe Damcho Yonten (‘Geshe-la’) who the Lam Rim Buddhist Centre was established under the guidance of, and the inspiration for.

Following a request from his Bristol students, Geshe-la visited Bristol on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month and taught at a house in Westbury Park. As the group increased in size, the Bristol students sought a centre and, in 1989, the Lam Rim Bristol Buddhist Centre was established in Bedminster. He continued his Tuesday teachings at the Centre together with occasional weekend courses and retreats.

On Saturday 26th August 2017, Geshe-la gently passed away at the age of 87. He was happy up to the last moment, urging us to “keep happy mind.” The centre continues to follow the purpose and direction that Geshe-la instilled in us.

As you enter the front door of our warm and welcoming centre, you can see some elements of our historic building which has stood for 122 years!
The building has already lived a long and rich life, serving purposes as a church club, various dancing schools, a YMCA and finally, the Lam Rim and Centre for Whole Health.

We'd like to give a special thanks to Paul! Our maintenance man and all-round friendly face. 🌸

Paul has helped the centre for over 20 years now, with everything from painting and decorating, general fixes and DIY. He's given the CWH all the love and care we could ever ask for. He's been our go-to man for any and all building needs for the longest time, and we wish him well as he moves into retirement.

Thanks Paul!

On our first floor we have not only our bright and spacious hall, but our lovely 'cafe', a self-serve area where you can find vegetarian snacks, treats and a variety of teas and coffee. There is also a kitchen at the back which you are free to use. ☕

There are several benches set out, perfect for larger groups or when classes or workshops are being held, and a comfy sofa at the back.

It's the fourth and final week of our receptionist team introductions! Today, say hello to Coby!

Coby currently works as a relief receptionist. He joined CWH as a volunteer Social Media Developer and enjoys the peacefulness of the centre. He has been working on our social media channels and photography for over a year, and will soon be a permanent receptionist! 📸

The receptionists take turns to take care of our welcoming room, helping to make appointments, take payments and offer a friendly face when you enter the building.

Wake Up is an active global community of young mindfulness practitioners, aged 18-35, inspired by the teachings of Zen Master and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh.

It brings us great pride to welcome Wake Up Bristol to our hall every Monday 6:30 – 8:00pm, to run their Meditation and Mindfulness Group.

They aim to nourish happiness, and contribute to building a healthier and more compassionate society. You don’t need any prior experience, and it's open to people of all backgrounds, genders, faiths, sexualities, cultures and incomes – so all are welcome!

Today we thought we'd show off our beautiful courtyard!🌼🌺🌹

Rooms 3, 4 and the Cafe overlook parts of this lovely, bright garden. It is regularly looked after by our receptionist, Caroline, and our maintenance lead, Paul, as are the many plants and flowers that grow here.

In our busy city, it's always joyous to find a little nature break. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

It's Week Three of our receptionist team introductions! This week, say hello to Georgina!

Georgina has been working on reception most Fridays, alongside her main job as Tozer Signs, for a few years. She’s thankful for the calm and routine that this day brings to her after a busy week of painting for businesses and private clients. She also enjoys the variety of people she gets to meet. 🖌

The receptionists take turns to take care of our welcoming room, helping to make appointments, take payments and offer a friendly face when you enter the building.

We want to highlight some more of the various therapies we offer at the centre - next up - Osteopathy!

Osteopathy is a physical therapy used to restore and maintain the finely tuned systems of the body with particular emphasis on the skeletal, muscular, nervous and circulatory systems.

The osteopath’s role is to use gentle techniques, such as soft tissue and neuromuscular mobilisations, muscle energy and manipulation, and cranial techniques, thereby allowing normal functioning to be restored.

The Centre’s Osteopaths are all also members of the British Osteopathic Association. You can see more about osteopathy and our practitioners below 👇

We want to highlight some more of the various therapies we offer at the centre - next up - Counselling/Psychotherapy!

Counselling can help you cope with:

⚫A mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder
⚫A difficult life event, such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown or work-related stress
⚫Difficult emotions – for example, low self-esteem or anger
⚫Many other issues, such as sexual identity

At your appointment, you’ll be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained therapist, who’ll listen and support you without judging or criticising.
All counsellors at the Centre for Whole Health are Accredited Members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

We have multiple Counsellors/Psychotherapists available throughout the work week at the centre and are confident you'll connect with one of them. Check out the list of them below👇

In this bright and eclectic corner of our reception room, you can find a spot for children to play and explore, as well as our Tibet Group shelf, where you can find small gifts and treasures with all proceeds going to Tibet relief funds.

Sarah, our Tibet Group contact regularly drops off lovely new hand-made shawls, jewellery, incense and postcards.

For the toy area, we have a rocking horse, very nostalgic teapot and several boxes full of toys for kids of all ages to enjoy while they wait.
