🪴 The Nursery Garden 🪴
This morning the sun was shining and I couldn’t resist taking some snaps of our garden space. We have access to five outdoor spaces here, many of them shared with , but this little nursery garden is all ours. The plants are growing, the wood-chip is ready for digging and the babies are ready for their daily walk in the pushchairs!

📚 WORLD BOOK DAY 📚 This week we have enjoyed marking World Book Day at Montessori. For us this looks like: Continuing to share a carefully curated and ever evolving selection of books in all areas of our classroom which includes both indoor and outdoor learning environments; asking families to feel free to send their children in throughout the week with favourite books from home; and, inviting children to dress up on World Book Day itself if they would like. At Montessori we spend a lot of time making sure that the books (as well as other resources on our shelves) are representative of our current cohort of children. It is extremely important to us that all children see themselves represented positively throughout our setting.

🎪 Circus Skills 🎪
We have had a wonderfully fun afternoon with .washy.clown coming in to visit us. He did a show, a workshop and giant bubbles and it was full of fun and joy!
Children took part in all parts of the show, spun plates, balanced and stood in giant bubbles - what an amazing experience. Swipe to the end for Karen being a willing volunteer!

1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ M A T H S 1️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ What does maths look like at Montessori? Maria Montessori believed that children were naturally drawn to order. They enjoy sorting and categorising objects as they find out about the world around them. Maths at HCH is everywhere. It’s in how we organise our time and routines, it’s in the way we sort and present our resources, it’s in the daily pairing of shoes, the roleplay shops, the songs and the rhymes (the list goes on…!) but it’s also in the carefully sequenced array of beautiful Montessori maths materials. Through these concrete materials children absorb mathematical concepts through real, hands-on learning. This gives them a secure and strong foundation for later more abstract mathematical experiences.

These beautiful photos taken by were too nice not to share permanently, it’s always fascinating to see what other people notice first in our little nursery!

Yesterday evening we hosted the Bristol Early Years Two Year Old Network, a wonderful opportunity to come together with colleagues from all over the city and beyond (thanks for coming 😊) to talk about what makes two year olds so very special.

For all our new followers (also thanks to !) we are Hotwells Children’s House, a non-profit, inclusive and relationship based Montessori Nursery. We take children from age 2-5 and are owned and Managed by Erin and Sarah, who are supported by the most brilliant team of Montessori and Early Years Teachers.

🌠 Come and work with us 🌠
We have two vacancies available at our lovely, term time only nursery.
The first is an exciting and rewarding support role, working with an individual child with additional needs to help them thrive in a nursery setting. The second is flexible work that can fit around you: joining our team of bank staff.

The 1:1 role is 10.30-4.00, Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is fixed term and linked to an individual child’s funding. It is likely this will be until July 2027.

The bank role is flexible and dependent on our level of need.

✋ Learning through the hands 🤚 Today our children have been exploring our Christmas resources with their hands. Maria Montessori believed that ‘what the hand does, the mind remembers’. Children’s purposeful movement through hands on exploration helps them to develop coordination, refine their movements and improve their concentration. All of these skills support them to develop their independence which in turn, grows their confidence and self-esteem.

🍐🥒 Food exploration 🍎🍌
We have been having such fun introducing food exploration as our morning snack now that the children are all truly settled.
Children have opportunity to explore fresh fruits and vegetables using all of their senses, building bravery and confidence to try new things. It’s all based on the ‘Sapere’ method of food education and is low pressure, fun and relaxed.
At the moment we are offering serrated knives for cutting, these plastic lettuce knives are great as children can refine the skill of sawing to cut safely. As they build their skills we will begin to introduce sharper knives.
