New Year, New Sport?
Here’s How to Stick With It (Or Know When to Move On!)
The start of a new year often sparks motivation to try something new—maybe you’ve picked up running, or finally signed up for that tennis class. But while some people thrive with new activities, others might find that their chosen sport isn’t quite the right fit. And that’s okay too!
Here’s how to stay committed or recognise when it’s time to switch things up:
🏆 Set Small, Achievable Goals – If you’re enjoying yourself but struggling with progress, break things down into manageable steps. Small wins—like running a little longer or improving your technique—can keep you motivated.
📅 Schedule It In – Life is busy, and without a routine, it’s easy to let things slip. If your schedule is genuinely too packed and your sport is adding stress rather than joy, it’s worth reconsidering if it fits into your lifestyle.
🎉 Make It Fun – If you dread every session, that’s a sign that maybe this isn’t the sport for you. Trying different variations—like swapping solo runs for group runs or changing up locations—can help.
💪 Listen to Your Body – Pushing too hard can lead to injuries or burnout. Take rest days, stretch properly, and seek support from professionals like physiotherapists if needed. If a sport is consistently causing pain or discomfort beyond the usual adjustment period, it’s worth re-evaluating.
🤝 Find a Community – A workout buddy or team can help keep you accountable and make things more enjoyable. If you prefer solo activities or social pressure stresses you out, choose something that aligns with your personality.
🔄 Give Yourself Permission to Pivot – Not every sport will be the right fit, and that’s perfectly fine. If you’ve given it a fair shot but still don’t love it, try something else—there’s no failure in moving on to an activity you truly enjoy.
