The roof of the mouth is innervated by several nerves, including the trigeminal nerve (CN V) and the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX), both of which are mixed nerves that carry both sensory and motor information.

The trigeminal nerve is responsible for sensation in the front part of the roof of the mouth, while the glossopharyngeal nerve supplies sensation to the back part of the roof of the mouth.

When the tongue is in the proper posture, pressing against the palate (roof of the mouth), it activates these parasympathetic cranial nerves, which can have a calming effect on the body.

The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for rest and digestion, and activation of these nerves can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

In addition to activating the parasympathetic nerves, pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth can also activate the muscles in the throat and neck.

These muscles help to keep the airway behind the mouth open, which can be helpful for people who snore or have mild sleep apnea.

Overall, pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth can have several beneficial effects on the body, including promoting relaxation and improving breathing during sleep.

One way to exercise the habit of pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth is through conscious awareness and practice:
1. Start by becoming aware of the position of your tongue throughout the day. Notice when it is resting at the bottom of your mouth versus when it is touching the roof of your mouth.
2. When you notice that your tongue is resting at the bottom of your mouth, gently press it against the roof of your mouth.
3. Practice holding your tongue in this position gradually increasing the amount of time you can hold it there comfortably.
4. Repeat this throughout the day, gradually making it a habit.

In addition to this, a Functional Activator is a great tool that can be used to improve tongue posture.

Brianna Peters writes in Vogue about her experience with receiving cosmetic acupuncture to help with facial scarring.
She reports that the treatment itself was relaxing and she "zoned out" during the sessions.

Brianna admits that one session is going to do very little, "consistency is key" she says, and found that her scars were improved by the end of her 10 sessions, and she felt better in herself about them.

Cupping therapy is an ancient healing method that can help ease back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain amongst other issues. Whereas massage uses applied pressure, cupping uses suction to pull on your skin to increase of the flow blood and reduce what is referred to as “stagnation” to the affected area. In TCM stagnation of qi (energy) and blood is believed to cause pain. In areas of “stagnation” the cupping draws blood to the surface resulting in what can be considered “bruising”, this disappears over a short period of time - (Gwyneth Paltrow was famous for her cupping bruises as were Olympians in the recent games) but generally the treatment risks are low. The clearing of the stagnation allows for the blood to flow through the areas where pain or tension is experienced.

There are a number of different methods in use…. suction cups, rubber suction cups and hot glass cupping which is my preferred method, but all have their place. There are also different techniques in the application which can be adopted depending on where and what it is being used for.
More to follow on this and where it can help.

Cupping therapy has recently seen a bit of a resurgence amongst masseurs and other therapists. It is a practice that I have been using for more than 20 years as part of my treatment protocols.

The following is a treatment I did earlier today. The gentleman suffers from M.S. and finds cupping therapy relieves the tension in his back, he experiences a strong release and a good flow of energy and his movement post treatment is stronger and much more fluid. Cupping is now his go to treatment. (Permission was received from the client prior to posting)

In recent years the discovery that omega-3 and B vitamins are co-dependent, that is one cannot lead to another, led to a study giving people with mild cognitive impairment either the B vitamin folic acid (800mcg) or omega-3 DHA (800mg) or both for one year, compared to those given placebos to test their effects on measures of intelligence.

The individual nutrients worked, but the biggest effect was seen in those given both omega-3 DHA and folic acid. The combination produced a significant improvement in all three measures of IQ (full, verbal and performance IQ), more so than the individual nutrients, showing a clear benefit for those experiencing cognitive decline.

And it can be needless!!! YES!

If you stood out on the street and asked people what they thought acupuncture was helpful for, many of them would say "it's supposed to help pain". It would surprise those people to learn that acupuncture helps pain, because it helps correct the cause of the pain.
It would probably surprise those people, that acupuncture can help most things, including organ weakness, coughs and colds, scar tissue, blood issues, arthritis, hay-fever, urine problems, and even eyesight. This isn't an exhaustive list, far from it, if you can think of a health condition, we probably have helped clients with that issue using acupuncture.

It may be a surprise to most people, but it's no surprise to your acupuncturist.
