Day 8: This July, our Orthopaedics Department has celebrated carrying out 3,000 MAKO robotic procedures as we continue to provide pioneering treatment to support patients across Scotland.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Director for Orthopaedics, Fahd Mahmood, tells us: “Completing 3,000 robotic joint replacements is a significant milestone for the Golden Jubilee and a testament to the hard work of staff across all elements of the service.

"We are now amongst the leading centres for robotic Orthopaedic surgery in Europe. Robotic procedures allow more accurate placement of surgical implants, whilst allowing the surgeon to retain control of the procedure.”

Day 6: This year, a pioneering new approach developed by an NHS Golden Jubilee volunteer and heart transplant recipient, Andrew Steel, could transform how healthcare researchers engage with patients and the public.

The project is being developed in collaboration with research teams at the University of Glasgow, The University of Edinburgh and Innovative Healthcare Delivery Programme and is the first step in exploring the potential use of these models to enhance public voices.

Day 5: This year, Our Eye Centre carried out a record number of cataract treatments for patients across Scotland 4 years after it opened its doors.

Our innovative Twin Theatre design and dedicated team allows us to perform cataract surgery more efficiently, performing around 30% of NHS Scotland’s cataract procedures.

Recently, 3 sisters from East Lothian were scheduled for surgery on the same day thanks to the quick thinking and kindness of our team. This reduced their travel and made their whole experience more personal, putting care and compassion at the heart of their journey.
