It’s International Women’s Day and this month I’m learning all about menopause with Menopause Movement & Burrell Education!
I see too many new sports therapists/physios etc learning skills such as dry needling & cupping & neglecting learning about the people we work with, but why?
It doesn’t set them apart from each other, but it also tells us nothing about the bodies we work on. No decent therapist would say we treat a female with perimenopausal symptoms the same way as 28 year old male rugby player or a female teen athlete even if they had the exact same injury.
That’s why I’m delving into all things peri to post menopause this month, learning all the signs and symptoms, how It’ll affect daily life and more importantly as a sports therapist & rehabilitator how It’s going to affect sporting performance and recovery from injury!
I’ve only been working full time less than a year, but in that short time the majority of my clients have been mid-life females, through absolutely no marketing or pushing by myself. I believe that this shows a lack of understanding from many healthcare professionals on all things menopause related and that mid-life women are being failed by healthcare providers - but also that education providers are failing therapists by telling us that rehab SHOULD be unique and individual but not giving us education on how different populations have different needs & different biology etc.
To any new therapist (ironic I know) don’t just follow the rest of the sports therapy sheep in adding manual therapies to your skill set. Learn about adolescent athletes, mid-life females, or any other population you want to work with. It’s needed.
