Our visit to the Yorkshire Air Museum today was a great success.
The site of the former Raf Elvington a world war two bomber base.
From 1942 to 1944 it was home to 77 squadron, flying Handley Page Halifax bombers on operations all over occupied Europe. After being handed over to the USAF strategic air command in 1952-1958 it was then transferred in the early 1960's to Blackburn Aircraft Company (now BAe systems) for test flying the prototype Buccaneer aircraft.
In 1992 Raf Elvington officially closed.

Not quite meccano or lego but cadets had a great night building structures out of 50 pieces of spaghetti and 50 mini marshmallow mallows. The aim was to make the tallest structure to withstand a specified amount of weight.
Some really great ideas and structures built between the four teams. The overall winners were the Leaning Tower Of Pasta.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Flt Lt (Ret’d) Clive Williams on the 29th of April 2025.

Clive was an active member of 1188 right till the end. He had a long and dedicated career with the Air Training Corps/Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

First joining as a cadet himself in the 1960s and returning to 1211 (Swadlincote) Sqn as the Sqn Adjutant in the 1980s, before moving to 1188 (Coalville) Sqn as commanding officer.

Following his retirement Clive returned to 1188 Sqn as a Civilian Instructor and was our Range Conducting Officer; leading the Sqn to many local and national awards. Clive would also assist with Navigation and DofE. Throughout his time, his direct and supportive approach always led the way.

Throughout Clive’s career he mentored not only thousands of cadets but staff as well, and he will be sadly missed.

Current OC of 1188 Sqn Flt Lt Andrew Buck said, “Clive was a valuable member of the team, he was a friend and mentor to myself when I took over as Officer Commanding, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are currently with his wife Margaret, his children and grandchildren along with all his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”
