‘Why on earth would you do this?… And you're gonna throw away what you spent on law school? Yikes’
Above is one of many comments I’ve had on my YouTube video about changing career from lawyer to therapist.
I do understand why someone would say it. Having made this change though, I could genuinely give this person endless great reasons why, which mostly boil down to the fact that this feels like a loved life now and, to me, therefore, actually a lived one.
Through first having therapy, then training to be a therapist and being the therapist since to lots of amazing people, what were once walls are now mostly doors in life.
One of the most recent of these doors has been my YouTube channel. It’s a channel with content about career change, both becoming and being a therapist, as well as a range of mental health and wellbeing issues, including narcissism, depression, relationships, s*xuality, banter, imposter syndrome and burnout.
I’ve included just some of the comments I’ve recently had from subscribers with this post, including the one mentioned above, to show the range of content titles and how they’ve been received.
The channel has really helped with the doors of finding my own frame and voice in life, connecting with all the wonderful people who watch, comment on and support it and, more recently, having conversations with inspiring people, including Lou Lebentz Trauma Thrivers, Bob Heath, Richard Rogers, Michael Toller, BPC, Volker Balleuder,🎗Maria Parker🎗 and Annalisa Barbieri about their fascinating careers.
I’m also really excited about future conversations coming up, including with Caz Binstead about her soon to be published book on Relational Ethics in Private Practice and James Hawes on the subjects of Men and Anger, Empathy and Intimacy.
I’m delighted to say that the channel is doing so well that I’ve recently become a YouTube Partner. I also use the audios of the videos for my podcast, which is now listened to by people in over 50 countries and 650 cities around the world. So a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of the journey to date and to UKCP for really starting it all off by posting one of my first videos on their website!
Please do take a look at the channel if you get the chance and subscribe/share if it’s of interest to you or you think might be to someone else you know.
You’ll see a link to the channel in my bio.
Also, if anyone wants to come on the channel to talk about something you think might work well for it, do let me know, I’d love to hear from you! Thanks, John-Paul
