When I see clients, I will observe and assess their breathing and find faster breathing in those with increased anxiety and pain, which they are often unaware of.

One of the most effective techniques I teach for calming down the nervous system is something called coherent breathing.

This involves breathing slowly, gently and evenly through your nose:

šŸ”¼ In for a count of five
šŸ”½ Out for a count of five
Repeat for a few minutes.

This simple practice helps improve your heart rate variability and can help reduce feelings of worry and pain intensity.

If a count of 5 is too much, start with a count of 3 or 4 and work upwards over several weeks.

Whether you’re caring for a parent, partner, child or friend, the demands can be both physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting.

A while back I spent time as a carer for my own elderly father, and it took its toll on me. As the saying goes, you can't pour from an empty cup, and I learnt that to keep going, I had to take care of myself too.

Caring for someone else often means lifting, bending, and moving in ways your body isn’t used to. Add interrupted sleep, emotional worry, medical appointments to attend to and the tendency to put your own needs last, and it’s no wonder aches and pains crop up.

It’s common to feel guilty about taking time for yourself, but your health is just as important as the person you’re caring for. If you’re in a similar position, I want you to know you’re not alone.

If you’re experiencing pain, fatigue, or simply need someone to switch off from the pressures of caring, I’m here to help with relaxing treatment and my stress management approaches.

If you're struggling with arthritis and have seen osteopathy (manual therapy) recommended as part of the NHS guidelines, but aren't sure what it entails, allow me to share some details with you.

Research has found that osteopathy (and other manual therapies) can relieve pain, increase flexibility and improve quality of life for those living with osteoarthritis.

The process works by releasing muscle tension around the affected joint, which helps improve the range of motion and promotes better joint health.

My hands-on approach helps your body relax, letting go of tension and pain, and calming your nervous system. You’ll also experience no clicks, cracks, or crunches. It’s an extremely safe approach for all ages.

*** Please note in this post, I am referring wholly to osteoarthritis as opposed to rheumatoid or other forms for arthritis.

One thing I’ve noticed is that many of my clients connect how worry and anxiety seem to make their pain flare up or linger longer than expected.

When we worry, our nervous system becomes more sensitive to pain signals. Living with chronic pain can also have a negative effect on your mental health, causing you more stress and more pain. It really is a vicious cycle. šŸ”„

By integrating mind-body coaching into my practice, I empower my clients to break that cycle and achieve a more comprehensive recovery from their pain.

Our in-person sessions together will also involve using hands-on osteopathy, where I'll support and guide your body towards remembering that sense of ease and feeling healthy.

Did you know there’s a link between our level of authenticity and chronic pain?

Gabor Mate describes Authenticity as ā€œour capacity to know what we feel, to be in touch with our bodies and to be able to express and manifest who we are in our activities.ā€

So when it’s put like that it’s not surprising that if we are suppressing our connection with how we feel and not permitting ourselves to express it, then chronic pain may develop.

I mention a research study done in 2021 which found the more authentic a person felt, influenced how well they coped during the pandemic threat if they were also suffering with chronic pain. Interesting eh?

I will be giving a talk on this whole subject at a SIRPA. Org CPD webinar next week, details in the comments.

In particular we will look at ways we can encourage people with chronic pain to develop their authenticity!

Over the last two weeks, I've been sharing how my lovely client Alison used Chronic Pain Coaching to reduce her migraines.

After the initial chronic pain recovery coaching process of 3-4 months, Alison had reached a point where she was getting a significant reduction in her migraines, and she was also easily able to apply the tools she had learnt by herself without support.

In the second year after coaching, she was free of migraines for a whole year, something she had not experienced since the age of 14 when they first started. She still has occasional headaches but has learned to manage those or finds that medication is now effective if she prefers.

To watch the full recording and find out more about how the experience was for Aliso,n the link to the recovery story is here:

Chronic Pain recovery coaching for migraine reduction and prevention is very helpful because it shows you how to embody mind-body methods and holds you accountable for applying them.

Most of them are relatively easy to do; however, it's also about forming new habits consistently so you build them naturally into your life and your internal world.

Also, as Alison explains, you can read and learn about these methods in a book, but the beauty of coaching is that they are applied to the individual, as everyone is different, and the way in which migraines are triggered is complex.

It's also essential to establish a good rapport with your chronic pain recovery coach. I offer a complimentary 30-minute Zoom discovery call to determine if we are a good fit for each other.

The initial coaching process typically lasts 3 months, with coaching sessions held every 2 weeks, and email contact provided as needed in between. However, some people require more or less time than this.

When we are having fun, we feel less fear!

šŸ”„ It's a vicious cycle. Fear fuels pain, fear of pain fuels more pain and more fear, and so it goes on.

As part of a Chronic Pain Recovery coaching approach, clients are encouraged to participate in activities which are fun, and to let go of the idea that some things are more likely to cause a migraine (even if they formed part of their previous belief system).

In my discussion with previous client Alison, she describes how Zumba - which she finds really fun - was actually much less triggering for pain than other exercise activities. This surprised her, because other exercises which she enjoyed less, seemed safer because they were slower and more careful, but were much more triggering.

Using a mindbody approach encourages clients to question their existing beliefs about what they are perceiving as ā€œdangerous and triggeringā€ by looking at the research and neuroscience, and examining their conditioned responses.

Have a question about Chronic Pain Coaching? I offer a free 30-minute discovery call so you can learn more about how it might help you!

Stress and Migraines - do you have to change your life?

Often, when people start to understand that stress may be having an impact on their migraines, they are worried that fundamentally changing their lives is the only way forward.

Whilst it's important to look at the lifestyle of a migraine sufferer and check for a sensible balance, we often find they already have a moderate lifestyle in place in order to cope with the symptoms.

In many cases, the biggest stressors often come from their internal world. High levels of self-imposed pressure, perfectionism, and a lack of healthy boundaries.

Chronic Pain Recovery Coaching isn't about fundamentally changing your life. Instead, it teaches you a range of evidence-based mind-body techniques, including boundary setting, emotional awareness and expression methods, and somatic tracking to help alleviate the impact of stress on your nervous system.

When we learn to do this well, over time, our body no longer needs to say no on our behalf by giving us a migraine.
