Please book on and be mindful that it is far more beneficial to attend consistently for several weeks if you can.
I run a 4-week booking system: you may book 4 weeks of classes for £40, however, if you cancel 24 hours prior to the class you can roll one over. Also, if you introduce a friend/family member/acquaintance and they book for 4 weeks, you will earn one FREE class! Please message me by any of the methods above to book on and pay.
Bring warm, comfy clothes - layers where possible; a warm blanket, cushion - anything that makes you cosy and comfortable. Although we will be sat, if you want to bring a yoga mat or a kneeling cushion/stool, that’s great too. It would be useful to bring a notepad and pen that you could use regularly in this class…

This week we are going to discover our unique, extraordinary qualities as part of our self-compassion and self-kindness which we will then begin to extend to others, bringing a connection that is genuine, authentic and based on compassion, awareness and kindness…Qualities that can often be ignored in our virtual connections with the world.

“Body like a mountain, Heart like the ocean, Mind like the sky.”

This beautiful quote comes from Dogen, a famous Zen master who lived at the start of the 13th century. What he's pointing out are OUR extraordinary qualities: the body feels stable and grounded like a mountain - a place to come back to rest. The heart is like an ocean – vast and deep, able to hold all our emotional life with perspective and the mind is like a clear, blue, boundless limitless sky where all our thoughts can take place within that very vast arena.

This week we are noticing, in these troubled times, the positive side of life and coming to terms that we have an inherent negativity bias that we can change, with practice…here’s the science:
The amygdala, central to the brain’s alarm system, dedicates two thirds of its neurons to processing negative experiences – if you look at brain activity in a scanner, negative experiences generate intense activity, while pleasant ones of equal magnitude, produce far less.

So, what can we do to help us store more positive experiences in our memory? Well, by focusing on pleasure, you can encourage the parts of your brain that notice and create the sensations of happiness and pleasure to grow and become stronger, so our neural pathways begin to change and balance out the negativity bias!

The more we can practice the habit of noticing the good things as they occur, stay with them for a little while, allowing them to enter our IMPLICIT memory, the more that calm and tranquility will build within us, thus reducing our pain and suffering; dissolving anxiety, stress, unhappiness and exhaustion.

This week we are becoming aware of Kindness to Self and how liberating this can be. Once we are kind to ourselves, we grow and continue to be nourished, thereby nourishing all those we come into contact with, especially our loved ones.
This photo is of Seascale beach at sunset, I wasn’t meant to be there, I was working, unfortunately, on this glorious Saturday afternoon when my clients cancelled and I thought, ‘what should I do now?’ It was an hour’s drive home and too late to head for the fells; at first I felt a little despondent that my precious time had been squandered but then I drove 10 minutes to this beautiful beach and walked into the sunset…
I just paused and seized this delicious moment to practice Kindness to Self by awarding myself time to do something wonderful.
Have a go…

This week’s photo is ice at Crummock water and reminds us that things are not always what they appear to be: is this a mask, a face, just a slice of ice? What does it remind you of? Your interpretations will all differ and in turn, this reminds us of our thoughts and how they can cause us to suffer unnecessarily if we believe them completely!
For example, you think: ‘This is so hard, I’ll never get through this!’ What you do is completely buy into this thought, and this in turn, causes more anxiety and stress piled on top of the challenging situation. What we will be learning this week is to realise that when a challenging thought is there, we can go beneath the emotion of that thought and feel the physical sensations of it in order to become aware of it, accept it and then to make choices on how to respond to it.

Each week we will learn new meditations and I will also provide you with some daily actions to practise in your own lives that will re-train those neurons in the brain to form healthier habits and shift challenging areas in your life where you may be a little stuck. These classes are suitable for everyone, including individuals with stress, anxiety and/or chronic health conditions.

This week’s photo shows Bega slowing down and taking advantage of the storms to just BE! We spend much of our time in the DOING mode, striving, not satisfied with how things are right now but trying to change them, improve them…Doing mode is future orientated and can be exhausting and unreachable.
However, there is an alternative, the BEING mode: this is orientated to the present moment, directly, in all its richness and imperfection, not feeling any need to change it, just being curious about our direct experience of the now.
Most people spend more time in DOING mode, in Mindfulness we try to shift the balance towards BEING – this is not passive and doesn’t mean we just let things be…it means we slow down, maybe pause and realise there are other choices available to us that we perhaps never notice when we’re rushing around in DOING mode…
Have a go: slow down, pause, re-frame.

Please book on and be mindful that it is far more beneficial to attend consistently for several weeks if you can, to enable greater understanding of the theories and concepts behind Mindfulness and Meditation; to be guided into how to practise these and to be supported in your endeavours to re-wire those neurons in the brain for a less painful and stressful life.

This week we see a heron, it can be seen sitting there so still for a full day, just waiting… allowing what it needs to come towards it, not striving and doing but just BEING, pausing, still.
So, some things to remember:
• Some suffering is unavoidable, it’s an inevitable aspect of being alive – we can build up resilience to suffering through MINDFULNESS and MEDITATION
• Some suffering is OPTIONAL if we REACT to a challenge this can cause added suffering, so try and RESPOND: reframe your language and ACKNOWLEDGE the challenge; become AWARE of the felt physical sensations of the challenge e.g. breathing rapidly, heart beating faster, clenching teeth etc. and then ACCEPT the challenge and choose to respond in a way that’s kind to yourself and all involved
• Understanding that REACTING to the unpleasant experiences usually adds to our suffering
• You don’t have to believe everything that you think!
• What we RESIST, tends to PERSIST
• We have an inbuilt negativity bias so remember to balance this by noticing the good and pleasant things that happen to you.

This week’s photo shows that in life, sometimes you just have to cross the Rio Serrano river on horseback, in Patagonia, and then everything will be ok.
