Today marks ten years since my Dad died. The hours, then days and weeks that followed were hard. My Mum was weakened by the same pneumonia that took my Dad and from caring for him in his final year, so I thought she would slip away too.

Bu instead she’s gone from strength to strength and shown she is resilient without measure. These years have gifted me the chance to know her better, appreciate her more and learn to soften rather than bristle when we don’t see eye-to-eye. To look for the common ground and not get caught up on differences. It’s been a humbling period of healing, learning, growing and strengthening to allow softening. Sharing time with her today was a most precious gift ❤️

Today I’m starting the Big Squat challenge in aid of brain tumour research. I’m honoured to be joining and her amazing team of now over 100!!!! This means that collectively we’ll be completing more than 10,000 squats per day, adding up to over 310,000 squats by the end of the month!

If you know Amelia you’ll agree she has the biggest heart and crazy-infectious enthusiasm, plus so much energy. You may not know that this is a very personal mission; her step-daughter was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour back in 2022. Following removal of a large part she’s made an amazing recovery and 3 years on she’s keeping herself fit, healthy and positive. But more research is needed to find ways to reduce the risk of developing a tumour and improve outcomes for tumour patients.

So supporting Amelia with this challenge is a no-brainer for me; it’s helping a friend raise money for a great cause whilst encouraging us all to improve our fitness.

I often recommend air squats to clients post meals as a blood sugar management strategy - they are easy to do, employ our biggest muscles and can be done ANYWHERE!!!!

Plus stronger thigh muscles are positively associated with improved cardio health, reduced fall/fracture risk and slowed cognitive decline!!!!! What’s not to ❤️

It’s not too late to join the challenge or donate and it’s certainly not too late to start a squatting habit - honestly, your future self will thank you.

Protection from a large bloc .....

In a world where nothing is stable
Nothing is as it seems
Things fall apart
Or crash down
Or crumble to dust in my hands.
Nothing can be trusted
And everything is unnerving.

But that’s life, right?
Teaching us to breathe through it all
Think quick
Be intentional
Stay vigilant
CONCENTRATE
And work on making calm our default.

I kept my water, an apricot and a few cashews. A “what if” stash....
What if we can’t find a way up
Or down
Or our ropes get severed
Or darkness comes too soon.
Apparently I have a crazy-wild imagination
- it’s all memories really!
Thats why, if I’m slipping under my duvet at the end of the day I’m always grateful.

Peak holiday season is just about here but, along with the excitement, in my work I often hear about the anxieties that come with stepping away from routine.

Genuinely I think that finding a different rhythm and pace is what makes a holiday so special, but it doesn’t mean you have to give up on all your self-care.

Here are 5 ways you can maintain strength without needing ANY equipment at all.

But …..

if you’re driving to your holiday destination then why not sneak a yoga mat, weights and a resistance band into the car 🤔🤩

Recently .....
I’ve chosen shade over full-sun (unusual for me) stayed inside the car because it was snowing (typical for me) and watched my mind somersault between optimism, disappointment and worry - mainly because a rock splinter in my leg turned septic 😔 but also I’m alarmed by the obvious effects of climate change and wondering at what temperature humans might actually melt 🤣😲?

Meanwhile, it seems yoga is going out of vogue these days - maybe just when we all need it the most! The practice is about mental steadiness; you can’t see it, only feel it. For me, this practice also happens when I climb; the two work together - one informing the other. Admiring fancy yoga poses or impressive rock walls might inspire but we need to practice; this is when we learn to watch our thoughts - not become them - then, instead of getting dragged down every “emotional rabbit hole”steadiness comes and this is the point.

Despite knowing that butterflies do live for more than a day, I still experience a pang of sadness when I see them - such brevity seemed heartbreaking to me as a child!

Yet it’s true, they are ephemeral. Do they know their time here is fleeting? How do they manage to seem so calm? Seizing the day yet appearing nonchalant and carefree? Purposeful disguised as playful!

Is it perhaps butterflies who have the “instructions for living a life”?

Of course, it’s a blessing to age and I’ve been feeling very blessed to receive so many messages and birthday wishes 🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼

But I’m starting to feel a bit secretive about how old I am! After years of thinking it’s vanity to hide one’s age I now understand; it’s those “you look good for your age” comments I’d rather avoid. I know they’re compliments but how bad should I look? 😳. I feel very tempted to say “I should think so, the amount I spend on fillers and Botox, oh and the jaw lift” 🤣😂

One person whose honesty is guaranteed is my Mum. “Gosh you are so old” she says again after singing happy birthday. I smile, she’s still here too and this really is a gift, even though she’s not old at all.

Anyway, we might celebrate differently but we both agree - every day is a reason to celebrate and it’s the weekend so, better still 🤩

Enjoy

I was a lil’ bit cynical when I was younger; grown up too fast and thinking it was cool to curl my lip into a “that don’t impress me much” kinda sneer. Yup, Shania Twain, I was there first!

These days though, I’m frequently in awe - just the little things that are “hiding” all around in plain sight!

I thought I’d share some of the things that have been impressing me this week, especially a vulture being harassed by a kestrel! But also ….

The tiniest of wild strawberries
A double rainbow
Pollinators at work on lavender
Mountain Azalea

For me, June was a month to ...
reflect
observe
listen
hesitate
gain clarity
then doubt the insights!

One step forward, one step back!
But ideas do grow out of uncertainty - when we’re patient - so, if you’re struggling to move forward, then pausing and just being present can actually be productive!

And it is July, after all, a fine month to slow down and enjoy the summer vibe 😎
