This week at Sing and Sign...

Our Babes have been learning about the importance of facial expression for early communication.

Our Stage 1s have been focusing on ‘WHERE’. We demonstrate this sign every week with Jessie Cat 🐾 and once mastered opens up opportunities for so many games and interactions with your little one.

Our Stage 2s have been focusing on the weather, which is very fitting given our current wild weather and Storm Chandra visiting the area on Tuesday! ☁️ ☀️ 🌧️ ❄️ 🌬️ We teach your toddlers key weather signs to help them describe what's happening in the world around them.

❗ Introducing Cumberland's new SEND Local Offer! ❗

The SEND Local Offer is a resource that all Local Authorities must have. It compiles local SEND information, provision, and resources in one place – ‘setting out in one place information about provision they expect to be available across education, health and social care for children and young people in their area who have SEN or are disabled, including those who do not have Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans,’ (SEND Code of Practice, 2015).

We hope that our new Local Offer will become a central hub for children and young people with SEND and their families for all information, resources and news about services and provision in Cumberland. We have chosen to move the website for several reasons, including:

➡ The new site offers easier navigation, making it simpler for families and professionals to find information and resources they need. We consulted with families on how the new website should look and feel following Local Government Reorganisation in Cumbria, and have co-produced the new site with SENDAC, the statutory parent/carer forum for Cumberland.

➡ The site uses the same platform as the Family Hub website, meaning there is more consistency and familiarity across websites hosted by Cumberland Council.

➡ The new site platform is simpler and easier to update, so we can keep information and resources as up to date as possible.

Top Tip Tuesday! 😄 Here at Sing and Sign our aim is to support and encourage your baby’s early communication and speech development. 😊

We encourage you to use simple signs which highlight key words in your spoken sentences, helping your little one connect words with objects, people, and activities in their world.

✨ So when you are signing with your baby or toddler it is essential that you say the word (or make the sound, like an animal noise or vehicle sound) when you use a sign - never sign in silence!

You will also find that when you sign you naturally slow down your speech around those important words (even if you don’t notice it). This draws your baby’s attention to the word and helps further to emphasise its meaning. 😁

Week 2 completed already! Thank you to all the wonderful families who attended class this week, what fun we've had!

What have our themes been this week?

Our Babes families have been learning all about gesture and how it helps in communication from using body language to signs.

Stage One have been learning the "no" sign. Not because we want to encourage parents to be negative with their babies, quite the reverse, but this sign can be used for so many different words (never, mustn't) and is useful to have in your repertoire when appropriate (e.g. don't touch, it's hot!).

Stage Two have been learning about all the colours of the rainbow! 🌈

Our Babes families have been learning all about eye contact - it's been so magical to see such lovely new-borns taking in their surroundings. 💖

Stage One have been learning about the basics, such as milk, drink, food, all gone.

Stage Two have been focusing on food and learning signs of all their children's favourite foods!
