This little crater shouldn’t be there.

My lovely patient came to see me for wax removal 10 months ago and his urgent ENT referral was today!!!!

When I treated him there was a big skin plug in this hole and I could feel bone after removal. The sound and feel of my metal suction probe on bone is the strangest thing, very distinctive and always slightly unnerving!

The consultant has arranged a CT to see how deep the cavity is and will review in a few months time. This is a confirmed canal cholesteatoma. Left untreated these can cause deafness, facial nerve paralysis and even brain inflammation.

Sometimes I look into an ear and can’t recognise what I’m seeing as some condition look similar, but I’ll ALWAYS let you know if I’m not sure or it just looks unusual and will refer on to specialist services. This is why it’s sooooo important to see a clinician with relevant background knowledge and experience.
