We have experienced a productive and eventful year thus far, though it was sadly marked by the unexpected passing of our Founder and Chairman, Martin Long, whose leadership will be profoundly missed.
As many of you know—and several of you attended—we hosted a number of noteworthy events this year, including expert-led presentations on a 16th Century Essex witch trial and the Roman excavations at the Old County Hospital site.
In July, students from Heathlands School visited the historic old church, and the Resonate Choir delivered another outstanding performance to an appreciative audience.
Additionally, we are launching a new website in early 2026; further details will be provided in due course.

Can you help open some (church) doors?

The magnificent door on our beautiful ancient church, St Mary's Old Church West Bergholt, has been opening and closing for a thousand years – but now we could do with a bit of extra help.
Our dedicated ’church opening and closing team’ needs more volunteers to ensure we
can open every day at 10am and close every day at 4pm to allow visitors time for
private prayer, review parish records or simply sit and enjoy the peace and quiet of
this very special environment.

This Sunday, July 20th at 2:30pm we warmly invite you to the Summer Songs of Praise service at the enchanting St. Mary's Old Church, a magnificent structure with a rich history spanning over 1,000 years. Your generous donations, whether in cash or by card, will contribute directly to the preservation of this cherished landmark. Everyone is invited to join us, and we’ll be offering complimentary Pimms to enhance your experience.
