THINKING OF JOINING A GYM IN JANUARY? READ THIS FIRST!

We all do it. We all feel sluggish, bloated and slightly ashamed of ourselves after weeks of festive gluttony. Most of us resolve to do something about it in January.

New gym memberships peak in the new year, but did you know over 80% of new members will have given up by March?

Why is this? Gym membership has never been cheaper or more accessible. Gyms are full of state of the art equipment and they employ staff who walk around to give help and advice.

The biggest reason why most people give up is because they don’t get the results they wanted and so motivation evaporates. The reason they don’t get the results is that they don’t know how to!

To make a difference in the gym, you need to follow a specific plan.

In an ideal world, your mobility will have been assessed so that any imbalances, stiff joints or injuries can be worked around.

Your workout plan will have been designed with your body and your goals in mind. Want to lose fat? Tone up? Improve your golf swing? Develop a six pack? Run a marathon? Different goals need very different workout plans.

In an ideal world, you’ll be taught how to do an exercise safely and with good form so that you get the most out of it and protect yourself from injury.

However most people who join a gym will watch a few you tube videos and then make it up as they go along. It’s no wonder they quickly get bored, don’t make any progress and give up!

Here’s the answer. The staff who work on the gym floor have a wealth of knowledge. They know how to write workout programs to help you achieve your goals. They can show you how to do exercises properly while you are there. Rather than trying to figure it all out by yourself, befriend the staff and get as much help as you can. They really want to help you but often new members feel intimidated or a nuisance and don’t make use of their valuable skills.

If you still feel awkward asking for help, consider employing your own personal trainer. You will be guaranteed a workout plan designed specifically for you and you’ll have someone to hold you accountable. Personal trainers genuinely want you to succeed and they will progress your workouts as you develop. They have a wealth of knowledge and can advise on nutrition, sleep, stress and general health as well as exercise.

Personal trainers charge anything between £20 and £50 an hour. Most gyms have trainers on site. Take your time research the right one for you, they often have different specialisms. (Back pain, pregnancy, diabetes, or body building are a few examples) Personal trainers usually offer the first session for free so you can try before you buy. Buying the services of a Personal trainer, even for a short period of time, will ensure you get the most out of your gym membership and aren’t one of the 80% than gives up after a couple of months.

If you actually hate gyms and want a personal trainer who can train you in your own home or in a private gym room in Brightlingsea, I can do that! - send me a text or call.

Who knew there was a ?!!

Well mental exercise does keep our brains young and healthy right?!!!....

Language and reasoning skills can be boosted by word games and crossword puzzles. Visual skills and orientation can be helped by mazes and jigsaw puzzles.

Puzzles can also be used to help cope with stress when used as a distraction tool. Distraction is not a long term solution from problems in itself but sometimes we just need to get through a difficult moment, so distraction for now, might help us in a crisis with difficult feelings or thoughts by shifting our attention to something else. Acknowledging our struggle and choosing to focus on on something else right now doesn’t necessarily mean we are ignoring a problem. If all we do is distract, deflect, ignore then, yes, it will likely bite us on the bum! But a little distraction, a little break, can help us return to a calmer state so that we can better move forward.

Taking breaks is another way to reboot. We need fuel, hydration and sleep to function, we also need ‘down time’. Puzzles can be a way to shift our focus. Try doing a simple sudoku or crossword, or a little bit of a jigsaw 🧩 puzzle. Don’t expect yourself to complete it just give it a go in small bursts.

For A Hug Exercise.......
Human connection is vital for survival. As social beings we need interaction and we need connection. The pandemic is having an effect on this and it’s important for us to find ways to manage the impact of isolation that many of us are experiencing. When we give and receive smiles and hugs we release the hormone oxytocin which relaxes us and reduces stress. Hugging can lower our blood pressure and reduce stress hormones. Oxytocin is often referred to as the “cuddle hormone”

Every day should include hugs!! If you can’t hug someone in person, which so many are missing, then virtual hugs or self hugs are still actually really important....

You can do this on your own or share together with someone via video link or even stood at 2 metres! Sure it might not seem quite as amazing as as being able to actually hug your family member or friend but it’s a good enough alternative for now.

AND anyway, hugging yourself is a good way of promoting self-love and self-compassion. So give it a go!!!

🫂 Fold your arms around your body, positioning them in a way that feels natural and comfortable
🫂 Cup your hands gently around your shoulders or upper arm (just above your biceps)
🫂 Close your eyes and imagine the type of hug you want
🫂 Gradually increasing or releasing the pressure to squeeze yourself with just enough pressure to create the sensation you’re looking for
🫂 Hold the hug for as long as you like.
🫂 You might find it soothing to gently rock back and forth while hugging yourself or perhaps gently patting or rubbing
🫂 If you’re really not sure about hugging yourself, start by just stroking your forearms or upper shoulders in a soothing way, as if you’re getting a gentle massage. Or try hugging a pillow or your knees ....or your cat or dog!!

Our Story

How well do you look after your mental well being? Many of us lead busy stressful lives and although we may recognise that it’s important to look after our physical health; nutrition, exercise etc, this often gets neglected and so, too often, does our mental health. Our mental health is AS important!

My clients may have experienced stress, anxiety or depression, low self-esteem, trauma. I help clients to reduce distress, better understand their experience, cope differently, make changes and improve their life. I work with clients collaboratively and safely through Counselling Psychotherapies; including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and EMDR. I also use compassion based approaches and mindfulness; with over 30 years experience as a Mental Health Nurse and Therapist I have a fairly good sized “tool box” and very much view each person and their journey as individual - one hat doesn’t fit all!

We need to continue talking about mental health issues and normalising distress as a human condition, just as hunger or thirst is. It really IS, “OK to not feel OK” (it may not feel it!) but it’s OK to ask for help when you are struggling with something and to look at healthy and productive ways to change how you are feeling or to cope with a situation. If you feel unfit and need some support, you might look for a gym or exercise partner, if you hurt your back you might find a chiropractor, an osteopath or go to your GP. If you are struggling with your mental health it’s OK to talk to your GP and it’s OK to find a service that can help you with your distress.

Our minds matter as much as our bodies - are you looking after yours?............
