Advice: Back pain is a common problem that many people deal with every day. Exercise often helps to ease back pain and prevent further discomfort. The following exercises stretch and strengthen the back and the muscles that support it.

Knee to Chest: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Using both hands, pull up one knee and press it toward your chest. Tighten the muscles in your belly and press your spine to the floor. Repeat with the other leg.

Seated lower back rotational stretch: Sit on an armless chair or on a stool. Cross your right leg over your left leg. Bracing your left elbow against the outside of your right knee, twist and stretch to the side. Repeat on the other side.

Lower back rotational stretch: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor (A). Keep your shoulders firmly on the floor, and slowly roll your bent knees to one side. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat on other side.

We've been a big proponent of building strength to prevent age related decline, to prevent injury and to become pain free. The science is clear... strength training is not only beneficial, but necessary.

Introducing the Unity Rehab Pathway!

We often talk about the 'rehab gap'. That phase after individuals have been discharged from NHS care, or private physiotherapy where they're getting by, but not thriving. Often, they'll experience a period of feeling better, only to reinjury themselves or for pain to creep back in. Our mission has always been to treat pain, but also to stop it coming back.

That's why we have launched the Unity Rehab Pathway. Our pathway takes you from acute or chronic pain, long term injury, illness or disability, or post-operative and all the way to returning to activity.

Gone are the days where you attend physio, see some improvement, only to be discharged and left thinking 'now what?' Our team will be with you every step of the journey, so you aren't left thinking now what ever again.

Step 1 - Physio. Patients undertake physiotherapy with us to get them out of acute pain and to improve mobility. Afterwards it's on to step 2.
Step 2 - Osteopathy. Our osteopath combines osteopathic principles with strength and conditioning, taking a holistic whole body approach. This step stops pain coming back.
Step 3 - Sports Therapy and Return to Activity. You've done the hard part, you're out of pain and it isn't coming back. Now let's get you achieving that dream - whether it is going for a hike with friends, or playing your favourite sport, our sports therapist will prepare you to get back to it.

2025 was a fantastic year for helping people get out of and staying out of pain. We're excited to treat more people in 2026.

Being in constant pain and discomfort, being limited in what you do everyday and paying for it the next day is exhausting. That's where we come in. Our mission at Unity is to give everyone the life they want and deserve. How we do it? Through hands on therapy utilising sports massage, through physiotherapy and through osteopathy. Most importantly? Through education.

When back pain strikes, it’s natural to become cautious — to avoid lifting, bending, or loading the area for fear of doing further harm. While this protective instinct is understandable, avoiding movement altogether can actually contribute to longer-term issues. In many cases, progressive strength training is not only safe — it’s essential for improving function and reducing recurrent flare-ups.

Head over to our website (link in bio🔗) to read more of our educational articles, to help you understand what you can do to get yourself out of pain and stay there.

What an incredible year it has been as we're unbelievably grateful to everyone we have met this year.

2025 has really been a blessing for us, as individuals and as a company. This year we have helped over 150 patients start their pain free journey, relieving long term chronic issues that prevented them from enjoying everyday activities such as playing with their children, picking them up off the floor or the sport that they've always loved.

We've grown as a team as well! We've brought on Callum, our student Physiotherapist who is just awaiting his registration with the HCPC, and Maria, our Sports Therapist who has helped countless individuals get out of acute pain.

We're grateful to have been able to help so many people this year, and we're looking for to continuing our mission of getting people out of pain in 2026.

We've only just over a week left on our 50% off initial acupuncture appointments offer, celebrating our approval by the local authority to provide acupuncture. So far we've had a great response and there's only a few appointments left between now and the 7th Jan.

What is acupuncture? It involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific body points to relieve pain and treat various conditions by stimulating nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, promoting the body's natural painkillers.

What are the benefits of acupuncture?
*Pain Relief: Acupuncture is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating various types of chronic pain.
*Chronic low-back pain (recommended as a first-line, non-drug option by the American College of Physicians).
*Neck pain.
*Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and hand.
*Headaches and migraines (acupuncture may reduce frequency and be more effective than some medications with fewer side effects).
*Myofascial pain (muscle tension and trigger points).
*Postoperative and dental pain.

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the incorporation of Unity Health & Performance - happy anniversary, everyone.

What a year it has been! We started with just Jessica practicing her Osteopathy Done Differently, and Jonathan handling marketing and strategy, to opening a clinic and growing to a multidisciplinary team consisting of a physiotherapist, osteopath and sports therapist. It has been a massive roller coaster, with ups and downs, hardships, Jonathan being deployed with the Army to the Falklands, laughs, smiles, tears of joy and heart felt wins.

To everyone that has been a part of this journey, that has helped us along the way, that has put their trust and health in our hands, we just want to say thank you. Thank you for believing in us, that we would be able to make a difference to your life, your health and your chronic pain.

We hope that we can continue to deliver for you, our patients, and make a difference to your lives. Here's to many more years of us helping people.

A new study 'Acupuncture treatment improves disabiling effects of chronic low back pain in older adults' by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirms what many of us knew all along - reduced disability, lower pain intensity, better mobility and daily function, and that improvements that last for up to 12 months.

Subjects in the study received a course of medical acupuncture with a few top up sessions and the results were consistent: less pain and better mobility. Furthermore, acupuncture remained safe, even for older adults who may be unable to tolerate stronger medication or invasive treatments.

Unity is currently offering 50% off of our 1 hour initial acupuncture appointment, which includes a comprehensive medical assessment, followed by treatment. Get in touch and start your pain free journey with us.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... at Unity!

Our favourite time of the year is upon us once again and we're super excited for it. Christmas is a time to spend with the family, friends, to recharge and rest.

To celebrate Christmas, we're offering double Loyalty Points when booking a Unity Recovery Session. Our Recovery Session blends sports massage with sports therapy. We undertake a movement assessment at the start of the appointment to identify the root cause of your pain and discomfort, before treating it with sports massage techniques.

We hope you all enjoy this Christmas period with your family and friends. Merry Christmas and God bless.
