Osteopathy isn’t just about your back…

A lot of people think of osteopaths as the go-to for back pain, neck stiffness, or sports injuries and while we do treat those things, there’s so much more to it.

Osteopathy is a whole-body, hands-on approach that supports how all your systems work together, not just your spine.

Here are 3 things many people don’t realise osteopaths can help with:

1️⃣ Jaw pain & headaches?
Tension in the jaw, face, or neck can lead to grinding, headaches, or muscle pain around the jaw when chewing. Gentle osteopathic techniques can reduce strain, improve function, and ease pain.

2️⃣ Digestive issues?
Bloating, IBS symptoms, or abdominal tension? The diaphragm, Vagus nerve, and surrounding organs all influence digestion. Osteopathy can help ease restrictions and improve gut function.

3️⃣ Chronic stress & poor sleep?
If your nervous system is constantly in “fight or flight,” it’s no wonder your sleep pattern suffers. Osteopathic treatment can help calm the body, support nervous system regulation, and promote deeper rest.

✨ The body is deeply interconnected and sometimes the solution isn’t where the symptom is.

👂 Heard of any of these before? Or surprised?

So, what does an Osteopath actually do? 🤔

It’s a bit hard to define in one sentence, because you are unique, and so is our approach.

We look at:
👤 Your age
🏃‍♀️ Activity levels
🥗 Nutrition
🧘 Lifestyle
🩹 Past injuries
🩺 Ongoing conditions

Then what?
We assess how your body moves, where pain or restriction is coming from, and why.

From there, we explain what we think is going on and build a personalised plan to help you:

✅ Manage pain
✅ Move better
✅ Or even train for that marathon 🏅

Treatments may include:
💆 Deep tissue massage
🦴 Joint mobilisation & manipulation
🧘 Manual stretching
📍 Medical acupuncture
📝 Self-care tips
🪑 Postural advice
🏋️ Rehab exercises

And yes, a follow-up is usually needed!
One session rarely fixes everything. Ongoing care = long-term recovery 🙌

I'm not really one for getting myself in front of a camera but I'm pretty passionate about the work I do to help my patientsmove pain-free, naturally.

It can be a little tricky to understand what I do, so, I've put a little video together along with some information below to help you understand what Osteopathy is and how it can help you lead a pain free life:

Osteopaths are healthcare professionals who focus on diagnosing, treating, and preventing a wide range of health issues, especially those related to muscles, joints, and bones. They use a hands-on approach, combining physical manipulation, stretching, and massage to improve mobility, reduce pain, and promote overall health.

Their treatments often aim to:

- Relieve pain – for issues like back pain, headaches, neck pain, and arm and leg joint problems.
- Improve mobility – through joint mobilization and muscle stretching techniques.
- Promote healing – by improving blood flow, reducing
inflammation, and restoring normal function to affected areas.
- Prevent further injury – by addressing muscle imbalances, poor
posture, or lifestyle habits and providing Rehabilitation plans
to help you walk, skip or run, into a pain free life.

Osteopaths treat a variety of conditions, from sports injuries, desk based tension to chronic pain or stress-related disorders, and they often take a holistic approach to healthcare, considering how the whole body functions together.

If you would like to know more, contact the clinic and we'll talk you through your questions.

If you've ever looked into alternative therapies for pain relief, you might have encountered the terms "dry needling" and "acupuncture." But have you ever considered the differences between the two and the benefits they offer?

Whilst they both involve the use of needles inserted into the skin and muscle, their approach and purpose are regarded as two different practices! Here’s a brief explanation of the differences between these two needle-based therapies:

✨ Dry Needling (AKA Clinical acupuncture) is a modern practice used to treat musculoskeletal pain caused by muscle strain, joint discomfort, injury, and tight muscle.

Technique: Thin needles are inserted directly into tight muscle fibres to release tension and encourage the body's natural healing process.

Goal: Primarily used to relieve musculoskeletal tension and pain, improve blood flow and range of motion. Dry needling helps by stimulating nerves and muscles, which can release chemicals that reduce pain, and promote muscle relaxation and healing.

Practitioners: Typically used by qualified Osteopaths (that's me😁), Sports Therapists, Physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals trained to provide Dry Needling only.

✨ Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, and works with the body’s energy (called "Qi") aimed at restoring balance in the body.

Technique: Needles are inserted into specific points along energy pathways, or "meridians," to help the body heal itself and improve overall health.

Goal: Used for a wide range of conditions, from pain relief to stress reduction, digestive and urinary issues, reproductive disorders, and more.

Practitioners: Performed by licensed acupuncturists trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Should you want to try either acupuncture or dry needling, but are not sure which treatment would be the best-suited option for you, drop me a line and I'll guide you through the decision process.
