🙌✨

I’m not going to sugarcoat this. If communication doesn’t work, it goes away.

Lots of therapeutic goals focus on getting students to use more words, but as an autistic adult, I would urge you to consider:

If your student has to:
find the right words
use a full sentence
say it politely
say it at the right volume
and pronounce everything perfectly

…just to get a basic need met, that’s too much effort.

Communication spoken, typed, or gestured has to work quickly, and consistently before we can: add words, work on volume, or practice please and thank you.

Because if we skip the “do these words work?” step, communication may fade.
And when communication fades, behavior often fills the gap.

So if you want someone to do something, make it easy.

If you want them to communicate, you’re going to have to be ok with temporarily honoring the single word, the broken sentence, the “rude” tone until they can say it consistently.

Until then, the please, thank you, full sentence, and whatever else, are implied.

✨ “But… they’re just playing?” ✨

If you’ve ever thought this during a speech and language therapy session- you’re not alone.

It does look like play.
But here’s what’s really happening:

🧠 First, I build connection
When children feel safe and understood, they’re ready to learn.

🎯 Then, I support communication- without pressure
No drilling or constant questions.
I model, wait, and respond to your child.

🧩 Underneath the play, key skills are growing:
attention • turn-taking • understanding • confidence

🎲 And this is the most important part…
Children learn best through play.
When it’s fun, shared, and safe- learning sticks.

💛 So no, it’s not “just playing”
It’s carefully supported learning that meets your child where they are.

I saw this little one in school recently ☺️

The adult asked him to do a colourful semantics activity… and he repeated “broccoli!” with a frustrated face.

Not random. Not silly. Communication.

Later, mum told me he really doesn’t like broccoli.

So “broccoli” = I don’t like this.
I don’t want to do this.

Too often, I see GLPs in early stages being asked questions, drilled on sentence structures, and expected to perform using approaches like colourful semantics.

But at this stage, that’s not how language develops.

They need us to:
✨ Follow their lead
✨ Reduce questions
✨ Listen and validate
✨ Offer meaningful, usable language models

Instead of pushing the task, we could say:
👉 “Oh… you don’t like this.”
👉 “Not now.”

Because language is for self-advocacy, not just answering questions.

Colourful semantics breaks language into parts and is adult-led.
GLPs in early stages are learning language in gestalts- whole chunks tied to real experiences.

If it’s not meaningful, it won’t stick.

Children learn best when they feel understood, not tested ❤️

It’s not about finding a better toy. It’s about being there with them. A simple toy can become a conversation when you join in, follow their lead, and add words 😊✨
