In advance of tomorrow’s International Day of the Midwife I’m celebrating a profession that has shaped my life for four decades — and the thousands of families who have trusted me with their most precious moments.

This year marks 40 years working in the NHS, with the majority spent doing what I love most: supporting women, birthing people, and families through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. Every birth story, every hand held, every moment of courage — it has been the greatest privilege of my life.

To all my fellow midwives: your compassion, skill, and unwavering dedication change lives every single day.
To the families I’ve cared for: thank you for letting me be part of your journey.
