Last year I lost my Bernese Mountain dog Biggie, and honestly, it broke me. I wasnât prepared for how heavy it would feel or how lost Iâd be without him. What stayed with me just as much as the grief was how little it was understood. People would say âitâs just a dogâ â but he wasnât. He was my family, my comfort, my soul companion .
There isnât enough space in the world for this kind of grief. Youâre expected to just carry on, even when your whole world feels different.
This year, to mark Sir David Attenboroughâs 100th birthday, Iâm doing something that feels meaningful. Iâm running 100km to raise awareness for pet loss and how deeply it affects us. I wonât be doing it alone â my 11-month-old Irish Wolfhound, Sully, will be with me for some of it (heâs still too young to take on the full distance).
Everything raised will go to Dog Friendly NI, who will distribute funds to local animal charities across Northern Ireland. These charities are doing everything they can for animals who need help, often with very little support.
This is about more than a fundraiser. Itâs about recognising that animals arenât âjust pets.â Theyâre part of us, and losing them changes us. Iâd love to see a world where people are given the time and understanding to grieve them properly.
If you feel this, Iâd really appreciate your support â whether thatâs a donation or simply sharing this.
This is for Biggie, and for anyone whoâs ever had to say the hardest goodbye to their beloved four legged soul companion
