80 years ago today, at 3pm, Winston Churchill addressed the nation with a momentous announcement: Germany had surrendered to the Allied forces.
The Western world erupted in celebration. In a rare and joyful moment of freedom, Princess Elizabeth—our future Queen—and her sister Princess Margaret even slipped into the jubilant crowds to celebrate alongside the people.
“God bless you all. This is your victory. In our long history, we have never seen a greater day than this. Everyone, man or woman, has done their best.”
—Winston Churchill
Today, we commemorate VE Day for many reasons.
It symbolises hope after the years of relentless bombings and suffering.
It symbolises unity, as nations came together to stand against tyranny.
But above all, it symbolises respect—for the millions who lost their lives, and for the sacrifices made by people from all walks of life.
We remember them and we thank them.
