After claiming the biggest win of his golfing career to date at TPC Sawgrass, a journalist asked Cam Young a seemingly innocent question.
“Why aren’t you smiling? You should be the happiest person in the world at the moment!”
Young’s response to this was deeply revealing:
“I think if you asked my wife, she’d say he’s a very, very happy person…I love my life, I love my family, I love my job…I have healthy little children…generally you’re not going to get a ton out of me, but it doesn’t mean I’m not happy”
Throughout his career, Young has typically been known to conduct himself in a understated and modest manner. He does not appear to be someone who naturally craves the spotlight. In fact, he seems to be deeply uncomfortable when it is shone on him.
I vividly recall when The Golf League (TGL) was first launched. Appearing on the Jimmy Fallon show, flanked by his more outgoing teammates, Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele, Young was mute for almost the entirety of the interview. It was painstakingly obvious that he was a million miles outside of his comfort zone.
So, after claiming a landmark victory at The Players, would we see a chirpier and more rambunctious version of Cam Young in the post-tournament pressers? Of course not. That would be totally inauthentic.
Yet, it didn’t stop that reporter from asking a question which is not only flawed, but is also symptomatic and reflective of a deeply held belief in the world of Golf: that is, that happiness is conditional upon success (trophies, scorecards, birdies etc).
Cam Young’s response to that reporter revealed something deeper: that when someone is not only aware of, but also in direct contact with their true values, they feel and perform at their best.
Moreover, Young gave us an all important reminder that happiness - much like beauty - is skin deep…
🗓️ On Wednesday 1st April, I will be launching a brand new sub-brand of Golf Yourself Healthy, which I have designed especially for the everyday Golfer, who loves the game, but who walks off the course feeling worse than when they first set foot on it.
