I have been asked a few times if I am selling my fetal doppler, I'm not.
The reasons are:
1) I may well need it in the future BUT mostly;
2) I totally understand that sometimes you just like to hear baby (appointments seem so far apart), but using a fetal doppler at home is NOT recommended and here I will tell you why:
❤️ When you use a fetal doppler you can be picking up all sorts of noises including baby's heartbeat, your heartbeat, cord/placental noises and bowel sounds
❤️ Without googling do you know what a babys heartbeat should sound like?
❤️ Midwives spend 3 years at University perfecting there skills at listening to a heartbeat
❤️ It doesn't stop there, midwives MUST refresh their knowledge on listening to baby's heartbeat regularly - there is a whole training package set up just for this
❤️ Did you know that midwives listen to (broadly) 4 different things when listening to a baby's heartbeat? They add this together with their other checks to make sure both you and baby are well
Now, here is the most IMPORTANT bit:
🌟 If you have any concerns about baby's wellbeing get them checked out.
Maternity services are 24hrs and I would rather you check it out and it be nothing than wait and it be something!!
While you Community Midwife needs her down time there is always the assessment unit on the end of the phone
🌟 If you want to hear baby's heartbeat more regularly, just think, when you do it will be all the more special
