It’s International women’s day.
The history of yoga practice is littered with male centered lineages from Krishnamacharya to Desikachar, Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois.
Today I’d like to remember some of the women:
Helena Blavatsky who first brought The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to the west.
Vanda Scaravelli who developed her own style of practice that focused more on women’s experience of the world through fluidity, grace and the dance of breath and movement.
Indra Devi who taught yoga to “the stars” in the 1950’s and was influential in creating the whole “healthy lifestyle” movement we recognise today.
Just a few of the many women who influenced the teaching and practice of yoga today. We are standing on the shoulders of giants.
