ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE
Unlike Western Medicine, acupuncture is a comprehensive approach that treats the underlying causes of illness. Acupuncture is a branch of traditional medicine that has been practised in China and the far east for thousands of years. It has been developed, tested, researched and refined over this time into a treatment option accessed by increasing numbers of patients in the West. Without the benefit of modern scientific equipment, the first acupuncturists discovered many now familiar aspects of biomedical science. A growing body of evidence-based clinical research is discovering how the body responds to acupuncture and its benefits for a wide range of common health conditions. Many people have acupuncture to relieve specific aches and pains such as osteoarthritis of the knee, TMJ pain, headaches and low back pain, or for common health problems like an overactive bladder. Other people choose acupuncture when they can feel their bodily functions are out of balance but have no obvious western medical diagnosis leading to western medical treatment. Many also have regular treatments simply because they find it beneficial and relaxing. The focus for a traditional acupuncturist is on the patient as an individual and not just their specific illness, and all symptoms are seen as part of an interconnected pattern. Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points which are said to affect the flow of your body’s qi, or vital energy, although there is ongoing research and study that suggests what many practitioners already know: that inserting needles into the channels (or meridians) affects change within the human body, and the term ‘energy’ is rather simplistic. Did you know that acupuncture is good for mental and emotional wellbeing as well as physical issues.

Studies have shown that acupuncture can significantly reduce feelings of anxiety and/or depression. It stimulates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) to initiate relaxation, and calms the 'fight or flight’ response - thus treatments slow heart and breathing rates, lower blood pressure and divert energy back to digestion which can help with IBS symptom flare ups, for example.

I have success with patients looking for help with low mood, physical pain, feelings of anxiety, stress and fear, IBS flare ups, problems sleeping, stress headaches and so much more.

Please contact me if you would like to know more, or to book an appointment. Clare x

It’s officially Spring! Although it doesn’t really feel like it, and the winter has been a long one…there are small signs that spring is on its way!
Traditional acupuncture theory sees the body as a microcosm that mirrors the macrocosm of the universe, and so, we experience the energetic shifts that occur in nature. Which means that during the seasonal changes we feel these shifts more acutely than at other times.
The shift in energy from winter to spring is especially dynamic and dramatic! In Chinese Medicine, Spring is associated with the Liver and Gallbladder organ and channel system. The Liver system’s energetics are responsible for the free flow of energy in the body, physically and emotionally. Like the growth of new plants in Spring, the movement of the Liver system is upward and outward - a real shift from the energy of winter, a time of restoration and retreating inward. Which is why you might feel it on a physical and emotional level at this time of year.
The change from a season of Yin to a season of Yang can bring vision, hope and creativity but can also bring about feelings of restlessness, irritability, impatience, difficulty making decisions, anxiety and depression. Physically, imbalance can present as muscle tension, premenstrual syndrome, breast tenderness, headaches, elevated blood pressure, menstrual irregularities, and digestive issues.
Acupuncture can be especially beneficial at points of seasonal change—times when our bodies must work harder to adapt to rapidly shifting temperatures and external conditions. It can help the body and mind to begin its natural process of self-regulating and healing, as well as strengthening the immune system.
If you find yourself struggling with your health more than usual as a new season makes its appearance, you might want to try acupuncture to help bring things back into balance.
