Celebrating Social Care 2026: A Career of Advocacy, Compassion and Choice

I am a registered Nurse with a lifelong passion for advocating for individuals’ rights, dignity, and, above all, their right to choose how they live their lives. Throughout my career as a Nurse in health and social care, I have been driven by a strong belief that person centred care is not a privilege, but a fundamental right.

This belief led me to co‑found Barclay Specialist Care alongside my husband Trevor. Established by a nurse, for people who need specialist, compassionate support, Barclay Specialist Care was built on lived professional experience and a clear moral purpose. Over the past nine and a half years, we have dedicated our lives to growing an organisation that places individuals, families, and communities at its heart.

As a nurse‑led provider, Barclay Specialist Care champions choice, inclusion, and quality. My clinical background has shaped every aspect of the service from ensuring safe, evidence‑based practice to empowering individuals to have a voice in decisions about their own care. Our work supports people with complex needs to live meaningful, fulfilled lives within their communities, with care that recognises them as individuals first.

Beyond service delivery, I have remained a strong advocate for the social care workforce. I believe that compassionate, skilled care can only be achieved when staff are valued, supported, and inspired by a shared vision. Leading by example, I have worked tirelessly to promote high standards, professional development, and a culture rooted in respect and empathy.

In recognition of my nursing services to the community and my contribution to social care, I have been invited to attend Buckingham Palace on 6 May. This invitation is not only a personal honour but a celebration of social care, nursing leadership, and the difference that dedicated, values‑led services can make to people’s lives.

As we mark Celebrating Social Care 2026, I am proud of the journey so far and deeply grateful to the individuals, families, and professionals who have been part of it. My commitment remains unwavering: to continue advocating for choice, dignity, and excellence in care for all.

Today we want to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible people working in social care. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment make a real difference every single day. You support people at their most vulnerable, often quietly — and that never goes unnoticed by us.
Thank you for everything you do.

Parkinson’s Awareness Month takes centre stage every April, serving as a beacon of hope and education for those affected by the disease. While the month remains consistent each year, its impact evolves, bringing greater understanding and support to the Parkinson’s community.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement, causing tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. By raising awareness and funding research, we aim to improve treatments and ultimately find a cure for this challenging condition

It is believed, approximately 15–20% of the global population is neurodivergent

Myth: It's a childhood phase/disorder
Fact: Neurodivergence is a life-long state, not something one "grows out of"

Myth: "We are all a little bit autistic/neurodivergent."
Fact: This trivializes the actual, lived experience of neurodivergent people, as it is a specific, profound difference in brain wiring, not just a set of "quirks"

Myth: They lack empathy or communication skills.
Fact: They often experience emotions deeply but may express them differently. They are not inherently poor communicators, they often communicate well just in a different more direct style.

Myth: It's a medical disorder to be cured.
Fact: It represents natural, neurological differences in thinking and processing.
