Having a plan of attack when you go into your competition can make the difference - whether you’re competing in strongman, powerlifting or CrossFit, knowing your strengths, planning when to push or when to reserve a bit of energy can give you the edge.
The main drawbacks I see in novice lifters particularly- and those less experienced stronger athletes too - is going in full send from event 1 with little regard to what comes next.
Taking 1st in an event is an extraordinary feat, but if it results in you bottoming out in 3 other events, then you won’t make the podium you may be aiming for.
So plan your warm ups, if you have a max lift then plan your opener/2nd attempt accordingly, if you have 2/3 events you know will tax you the hardest, plan what you’re going to aim for, and what you can do in your other events to give you the best shot at taking the best overall result.
