I've been working as a Speech and Language Therapist since 2007. I've worked in the NHS and in schools (special schools and mainstream schools). I work with children with a wide range of difficulties. These include children making speech sound errors, children with delayed or disordered language development, those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties, learning disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
I recently returned to work from maternity leave and have decided to develop an independent practice. This means I can see children at their home or in their school and work with them for as short or as long a time as is needed to support them and their families.
I love working with children and supporting them to develop their communication skills. The ability to successfully communicate with other people is so important to a child's wellbeing. Whatever level they are at, seeing a child communicate more easily with those around them is hugely rewarding. The impacts of this can be wide ranging, for example behaviour can alter through reducing frustration, a child's confidence can blossom, friendships can develop more easily, attendance and/or attainment at school can improve. These initial impacts will go on to have an effect on the rest of the child's life.
