Just 4 weeks to go until London Marathon! Why not treat yourself to a sports massage?

BENEFITS OF SPORTS MASSAGE FOR MARATHON RUNNERS

For most of us, running a marathon is an intense physical challenge and a massive commitment. The last thing you want is an injury that could force you to pull out before the big day. The role of sports massage therapy when marathon training is to keep your body in optimum working order.

Sports massage ..during a marathon preparation
I would recommend starting with a sports massage about once or twice a month during the initial phase of training. At the time, I will be able to identify where you are tight, monitor how your body is coping with the extra impact and mileage, help you recover after a tough session, or give advice how to stretch properly. Moreover you will be more aware of any niggles and tightness that may be starting to build up as your distance is increased. Maintenance massages are a great way to identify and treat tighter areas before injuries occur.
..in the final week
It’s very helpful to get a sports massage during the week before the event. Lighter, long flowing massage strokes, known as effleurage, help to relieve muscular tension without damaging fibres. It also improves tissue permeability and allows nutrients and oxygen to reach the cells quickly. This may help you to optimise your performance, and it is ideal during the days approaching your marathon.
..post marathon
Sports massage after the big 26.2 mile run helps the microscopic damage to your muscles repair. It will ease that post event soreness, and provide strong psychological benefits. It will make you feel relaxed and will rebuild the confidence for your next run.

Finally, a post race sports massage is especially useful for anyone looking to recover quickly. So don’t forget to book your post marathon massage for the week after the race. It will be a good way to take a break from the hard training and a great excuse to just lay down and do nothing for an hour :-).

What are benefits of heat therapy?

Heat therapy works by improving circulation and blood flow to a particular area due to increased temperature. Increasing the temperature of the afflicted area even slightly can soothe discomfort, relax muscles and heal damaged tissue. Improved circulation can help eliminate the build-up of lactic acid waste occurs after some types of exercise.

A study published in the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy evaluated how well heat and massage enhanced flexibility. More over both heat and massage treatment calms painful muscle spasms, reduces pain caused by stiffness and makes some exercises more tolerable.

Heat therapy is usually more effective than cold at treating chronic muscle pain or sore joints caused by arthritis.

Don't afraid of heat 😁...
Stay safe tomorrow, exercise early in the morning, and avoid becoming dehydrated☀.

Hi everyone,

Hopefully you all cooled down a bit after Northbrook 10k last Sunday. I would love to say THANK YOU to Northbrook Athletic Club for letting me to provide a post event massage, especially to Terry Moynihan, Jill Pittard and Lisa Abbott for all your help, and to Mr. Eddie ;-) for delicious ice-creams 😂.

Keep running and enjoy the sunshine!
