Did you know that memories from decades ago can sometimes be easier to access than what happened this morning?
That is why reminiscence therapy can be so powerful. Long term memories are often stored differently in the brain and can remain intact even when short term memory becomes unreliable.
What many people do not realise is that reminiscing is not about testing memory at all. It is about reducing pressure. A photograph, a familiar song or a shared story can help someone feel calmer, more confident and more able to communicate, often leading to richer conversations and better emotional wellbeing in the present.
Very often, when supporting someone living with dementia, our Care Professionals in Coventry South naturally use reminiscence as part of their visits, through conversation, music, photos or shared routines. It is one of the many small, thoughtful ways we help clients feel more at ease and connected in the moment.
