Understanding Engorgement

Are you familiar with the term engorgement?

Engorgement happens when milk is not properly released from the breast.

This can result from delays in breastfeeding, poor positioning, or improper attachment.

To help engorgement, ensure you are feeding responsively and getting milk out.

Hand expressing is recommended, and this video demonstrates how to do it while also covering safe storage of breast milk.

If you need advice, support, or reassurance, please contact the Coventry Infant Feeding Team, your midwife, or health visitor.

WARNING: Baby sleep pillows can be deadly

These soft pillows and cushions are often marketed for baby sleep or as somewhere for a baby to be left unsupervised. But this can cause suffocation or overheating, and your baby might even die.

Despite what some online product listings suggest, pillows are not recommended for babies until they are at least 12 months old. The safest place for your baby to sleep is on a clear, firm, flat surface.

Just a little reminder that your breastmilk is perfect for your baby 🩷

[ID: Did you know? Breastmilk is the perfect meal for your baby. It contains more than 200 types of fatty acids, over 400 types of protein and is more than 85% water. This means they do not need anything else for at least the first 6 months. Image of a mum breastfeeding her baby.]

🟧 – Day 9: A Child’s Voice

Today we’re sharing the words of a child who has stayed in our refuge:

💬 “I like it here because we can sleep all night. At my old house I used to stay awake to check if Mum was ok”

No child should ever know that kind of fear.
No child should feel responsible for keeping a parent safe.
Every child deserves rest, safety and the chance to simply be a child.

At Coventry Haven Women’s Aid, we do everything we can to give children fleeing Domestic Abuse warmth, stability, space to play, and a place where they can finally breathe.

Can you please help keep our services in place, for every child living with violence?
