Today, on World Poetry Day, we’re reminded of the quiet power words can hold, especially during times of grief.

Poetry often gives shape to feelings that can be hard to express. A few lines, a simple rhythm, or a moment captured on the page can bring comfort when emotions feel overwhelming. For many people who are grieving, poetry becomes a space to pause, reflect, and feel understood.

Poetry can also create a powerful moment of connection during a funeral, offering words that gently express feelings many people struggle to say aloud. Its rhythm and imagery help bring calm, reflection, and a sense of shared understanding.

Mother’s Day is a chance to celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, and mother‑figures who have filled our lives with love, guidance, and warmth. Their care shapes families and communities in countless meaningful ways.

As funeral professionals, we see every day how powerful a mother’s influence can be — in the stories families share, the traditions passed down, and the love that continues long after someone has gone.

Whether you’re spending the day together or reflecting on the memories that make you smile, we hope this day brings a sense of gratitude and connection.

On International Women’s Day, we recognise the women who bring gentleness, understanding, and steady compassion to families experiencing loss.

Their empathy makes a profound difference. Their presence brings warmth, dignity, and humanity to every family they meet.

To all the women who support grieving families with kindness and care — thank you.

Tone of voice

If you are struggling with writing your message, it may help to think about the voice of the person speaking it. You could use a favourite quote or saying your loved one used.

You could also write the message as though it is being spoken by a family member or a close friend, remembering your loved one.

If you are still struggling to choose the correct words for a headstone inscription you can ask your local Funeral Director for guidance. Our knowledgeable teams can help guide you on pricing, designs and any restrictions, of the local church or burial site as well as offer advice on the perfect tribute for your loved one.

Less is more.

Headstone space is limited to a few lines, and shorter epitaphs often work well. Typically, your message should include a name, birth and death date, accompanied by a simple personal message to reflect your loved one. Your message could include family relationships, a traditional phrase, or a faith-based message. You could also include symbols, engraved images or photos, dependent on the restrictions of the church or burial ground.

Some examples are:
• In Loving Memory of
• Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather
• Till We Meet Again
• Now Protecting Us from Above
• In God's Care

You do not need to write a lot for your message to be meaningful. You can choose from different fonts and finishes such as gilding (gold leaf) and painting i.e. white, silver and black.

Our Funeral Home teams can provide guidance and support you, ensuring the final inscription reflects the personality of your loved one. Share your advice on writing an inscription for a headstone.

Grateful thanks go to Anna, Trish and the team from a family who we recently cared for.

Everything from the initial organisation of the type of service , to the coffin she wanted was excellent and done to her personal specifications. The funeral service was just the way she wanted it and the orders of service were just the way we wanted.
Your strength and support on the day of the funeral was splendid as was your professionalism. Our Mum would have been pleased that she had the same funeral wishes as our Dad and that she is reunited with him again. Thank you.
