When planning a cremation, choosing the right crematorium is about more than logistics, it’s about atmosphere, surroundings, and feeling confident that everything will run smoothly.

We’ve put together some details on the main crematoriums we work with across Coventry, Solihull, and Birmingham.

Helping to give you a clearer picture of what’s available locally, from your Local, Independent, Family Funeral Director.

If you are contemplating a direct cremation for yourself or a loved one, we invite you to consider our services.

Frequently promoted as a more cost-effective option, we are, in many instances, more affordable than online companies that advertise direct cremation services.

Our basic, direct cremation is £1500.

We assure you of our prompt response in the event of a loved one's passing, you can reach us 24 hours a day on 024 7647 3000.

Our on-call team will attend, typically within an hour of being contacted, to bring your loved one into our care.

This same team will continue to accompany your loved one throughout their time with us.

Your loved one will be cared for locally at all times in one of our two offices, and the cremation will also take place in the local area.

Our daytime team is dedicated to providing personalised, family-oriented support throughout the entire process. They will be available to assist you and your family every step of the way.

You will have the assurance that you will be speaking to the same small, family team whenever you need to, you will not have to navigate a call centre to try and get assistance.

Cremation will take place at a local crematorium (which we will select) with the utmost of respect and dignity and in most cases the ashes will be available within a few days.

Of course, being a family owned and operated funeral director, our team can assist you to further personalise our direct cremation service, we are happy to discuss all the options with you and your family.

Lastly, we have proudly served as your local community funeral director for many years, and we sincerely appreciate your trust in allowing our family to care for yours.

Military and additional services to create a meaningful farewell.

If you are arranging a funeral for a past or serving member of the Armed Forces, we can provide expert guidance, drawing on our many years of experience.

In such a situation, a military chaplain can be arranged, if appropriate and as we work closely with the Royal British Legion, we can make arrangements for them to support you as well as arranging the appropriate military honours as part of a dignified and respectful farewell.

This week we have covered many traditional elements of the services that we can offer, but we hope that we have given you a few ideas and demonstrated that we can assist you to personalise a funeral to any degree.

Now we will just highlight a few additional services which you may not be aware of.

One particularly popular option (not just for a burial) is a white dove release.

White doves provide a beautiful and poignant tribute, and the sight of them soaring to the sky above, can offer a moment of peace and comfort at the end of a service. Ask our team for more information, they can ensure that the dove release is carried out at the appropriate time.

Another option available for any funeral, is the presence of a bagpiper. The piper can perform as the procession arrives , during the service or (at a burial) as the coffin is carried to its final resting place.

Pieces such as Amazing Grace or traditional laments are popular choices offering both a moving and timeless tribute.

Next week we are going to do a special feature on coffin choices and designs. We very much hope that you have found this of interest and as always, please do comment or call us for more information.

There are many aspects to consider when organising a service, not least the music.
You do not need to worry as our arrangers will assist you with everything, and we can access any piece of music, or song that you would like to be included.

A standard service would usually include three pieces of music, but we can personalise it entirely to your wishes, creating a truly meaningful and personalised farewell.

However, you aren't just limited to having recorded pieces, many people now opt for a singer or a musician to perform as part of the service. We work with the amazing Debbie Lynne, a talented local violinist who can perform not only classical pieces, but any piece of music that holds a special meaning for you. Debbie also offers a celebrancy service so she will work with you and your family, to create and deliver a completely personal eulogy.

A close friend of ours, David Lawrence, also offers a truly personalised musical experience for funerals. With an extraordinary career which includes performing the leading role in Phantom of the Opera on ice as well as performances with the Moscow State Circus and the Russian Ice Stars, David brings both talent and professionalism to every performance.

We are happy to provide further details if this is something that you may now consider when arranging a funeral service.

Another important consideration is the role of the celebrant, who will work alongside you and your family, to create a truly personalised eulogy as part of the service of farewell.
We work with many celebrants, all of whom have different skills and personalities, and we will be happy to ensure that we introduce you to exactly the right fit for your requirements.

The wonderful Alan Penny and the Reverend Glyn Shipton are just two of the celebrants we work very closely alongside, or you might have somebody else in mind.

If you would like a religious service or would prefer a humanist or civil approach, our many years of experience mean that we can connect you with exactly the right celebrant. They will take the time to get to know you and your family, very often at home, to ensure that the service is a perfect reflection and as unique, as the life lived.

On the day of the funeral, there are countless options to take your loved one to the service, wherever you have chosen that to be. Either a church, or a crematorium is most common but I have been to the service for an amazing man which was actually held at a hotel with hundreds of people there to celebrate his life.

You aren't limited to a traditional hearse, we are finding that many people now opt for the majestic horse drawn carriage, the horses always look amazing in their plumes which can be colour personalised to suit you. We can also arrange for a motorcycle hearse complete with out riders if required.

If you or your loved one are Land Rover enthusiasts, it is possible to use a customised Land Rover Defender TD5 130 hearse - similar to that chosen for the funeral of the late Prince Philip.

Other choices include a classic VW Campervan or Beetle which have been specially converted to be used as a hearse.

For something truly unforgettable, you might consider the unique Only Fools and Hearses tribute, an absolute replica of the Trotters' famous yellow three wheeler. And if you recall the beloved episode featuring Batman and Robin....yes we can arrange for them to run ahead of the yellow hearse if required!

At one particularly uplifting farewell: our funeral director and the team were asked to dance from the back to the front of the chapel, at the end of the service, to Bring Me Sunshine by Morecambe and Wise.

We still remember the joyful laughter of the congregation as they left the service, a testament to the uniqueness and warmth of that special and meaningful goodbye.

More and more families are choosing green or natural burials for their loved one, or themselves.
In fact, according to the National Funeral Director’s Association 2024 Consumer Awareness and Preferences Report, 68% of people surveyed showed an interest in natural burial, up from 55.7% in 2021.

These burials offer a beautiful, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional funerals, allowing someone to return to the earth in the gentlest, most natural way possible.

At Franklin & Hawkins Independent Family Funeral Directors, we’re proud to support families in creating meaningful farewells that align with personal values, beliefs, and hopes for the planet.

When a loved one passes away, especially if it is sudden and unexpected, it can be deeply shocking. In the midst of this shock and grief, there are many practical tasks that need to be carried out, such as notifying friends and family and thinking about a funeral.

It can feel utterly overwhelming at a time when you are feeling bereft from the loss of a loved one.

We often post information about the value of pre-planning a funeral, but it isn't always just the financial benefits. If you are unable to commit to the decision to pre-plan financially at the moment, we offer a free service to help you to record your own funeral wishes, or those of a loved one.

We can guide you through the options, give you an idea of potential costs and then document your wishes in detail. They will then be stored away until such times as they are needed.

That leaves your family in no doubt as to what you would like, even in terms of music for the service or the outfit you would prefer to be dressed in to where you would like to be buried or have ashes scattered.

As part of the services offered by us, there is often an opportunity, where appropriate, to visit your loved one in one of our chapels.

Our funeral wishes service allows the choice of coffin to be pre-selected but even with this, there are many other options to consider in addition to the traditional wooden coffins.

Now you can choose between wood or wicker. There is even an option for a woollen coffin or a cardboard coffin.

We recently supported a family who chose a cardboard coffin for their loved one, friends and family gathered at the chapel to decorate it with hand drawn artwork and personal messages. It was an incredibly touching tribute, deeply personal and filled with love.

So, the choices are vast. Have you thought about what you might prefer?

Feel free to contact our offices to find out more about the funeral wishes service, or for more information about any aspect of funeral planning.
