The Eye Care conversations are now closed to new ideas. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share an idea or experience, or vote/comment on ideas already posted. Your contributions are very much valued.

What happens next:

As part of the crowdsourcing approach, we will begin to identify the Big Ideas. This is done by filtering every idea and experience that has been posted on the crowdsourcing space and quality assured by a group of Champions, topic experts, and critical friends.

The Pathways Transformation team will explore the Big Ideas for implementation and improvement in the relevant areas in 2025/26.

"Patient letters are sent out by a contractor. The letters sent to eye care patients are in point 11, which is not accessible.

The eye care team then retype the letters in a more accessible format.

This means the patient is sent two sets of letters.

It's a waste of time and resources."

Thank you to the community member who shared this experience.

What are your examples of good practice for sending letters in an accessible format to patients in the eye care pathway?

"Unless issues are picked up at birth or through Health Visitors, it is hard to know if children and young people might not be able to see, especially if they cannot say that for themselves.

"There are hearing checks at birth but not eye checks."

Thank you to the community member who shared this idea. What do you think?

"I would like to see low vision services in High Street practice, easily accessible for patients.

"One of our regional hospitals has a 12 month wait for low vision, whereas I could see them next week!"

Thank you Annette Ball for sharing this idea about how we can move more eye care services into the community.

What do you think of this idea? Do you have examples of where High Street practices see people for issues with low vision?

"No one is too disabled to have an eye test."

Thank you Rebecca for sharing your idea and experience. How can we make sure eye care services are accessible to everyone and targeted to meet the needs of different communities? What good practice examples can you share?

Journeys made by car are a significant contributor to carbon emissions.

Thank you to Patricia who shared this idea about making eye care greener:

"I have age-related wet macular degeneration, and type 2 diabetes. I have appointments for the age-related wet macular degeneration at one hospital, and go to the diabetic eye clinic at another hospital.

"This creates more journeys, causing more carbon emissions. Public transport access isn't great so I get a lift.

"Would it be possible to combine appointments, or co-locate clinics to save on journeys and therefore carbon emissions?"

What do you think? Do you have any examples of co-located clinics, or do you have ideas for making eye care greener?

Thank you to Stephanie Cairns for sharing this idea about improving eye care for children and young people.

"The Red Book given to new parents should have information about taking their children for sight tests.

Children do not need to be able to read to have their eyes tested and it's recommended that they start having sight tests from around the age of 3!"
