Resident Doctors have begun five days of industrial action that will last until 7am on Wednesday.

We have been working hard to put plans in place to protect patient safety and minimise disruption. Unless you have been contacted by us, please continue to attend for booked appointments or procedures.

Our Emergency Department will be busy but we are still here to provide emergency care when you need it. When the situation is not an emergency, please contact NHS 111.

Not one to do things by halves, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Devaraj Srinivasamurthy, recently took on a gruelling bike ride across the hills of South Wales to raise funds for UHCW Charity - University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire Charity

The Dragon Ride, known as one of the UK’s toughest cycling challenges, sees riders take in the breath-taking Welsh scenery whilst tackling sweeping descents and challenging climbs.

Devaraj was inspired to take on the challenge to raise funds for a hybrid operating theatre, which utilises state-of-the-art radiology facilities within an operating room to ensure procedures are as minimally invasive as possible.

“I’ve not done this kind of a challenge before so was I looking for something I could do to raise funds and awareness of the importance of this resource,” said Devaraj.

“When I first looked at the Dragon Ride, I thought there was no way I could do it, but when I put my mind to it, I realised it was possible.”

Devaraj went on to complete a 180km ride, which has now given him the bug to do more.

“It was really good. It was very tough and a lot more challenging than I anticipated, but I enjoyed it so much and it felt so good reflecting on what I had done the day after,” he said.

“I want to take on more rides and keep on raising money towards the hybrid operating theatre.”

Devaraj’s next sporting endeavour will see him take on the Cotswolds Classic at the end of August.

🔎 We found Pablo!
At UHCW, we love to recognise inspirational individuals who go above and beyond when caring for our patients and were so happy to see a patient's family share how our Porter, Mohammed Issa (also known as Pablo) made a difference to them over social media this week.

Thanks to a bit of detective work, we were able to track down Pablo and surprise him with a thank you card. Watch the video to see his reaction!

💛 Is there someone like Pablo that you want to say thank you to? Nominate them for an Outstanding Service and Care Award here: https://www.uhcw.nhs.uk/oscas/

Every year, our Outstanding Service and Care Awards (OSCAs) celebrate the incredible contributions of Team UHCW colleagues to high-quality patient care.

We spoke to Charge Nurse Joby Cyriac, last year's winner of the Supporting the Delivery of Care Award, to find out what being an OSCA winner meant to him, and the lasting impact it's had.

Is there a healthcare hero you'd like to recognise? Nominate them for an OSCA here: https://www.uhcw.nhs.uk/oscas/

All nominees receive a certificate with your words written on it and it will mean the world for them to hear about the positive impact they are having.

🎉 Congratulations to Microbiology Section Manager, Janet Sinclair who recently celebrated 50 years of NHS service.

Janet started her career in microbiology in 1975 at the age of 18 and in 1980, made history as the youngest ever Senior appointed in Coventry at 23 years old.

She has played an instrumental role in training and supporting the development of her colleagues in Pathology. She is very passionate about the service and enjoys passing on her knowledge and experience to newer members of the team.

💬 Janet said, "Thank you to everyone for celebrating this milestone with me. I'd do another 50 years if I could!"

Janet’s service milestone is one of many recognised as part of our recently expanded Service Awards, which recognises 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 25, 45, 50 and 55 years of dedicated service to the NHS.

She was presented with a framed certificate and pin badge by Chief People Officer, Donna Griffiths and Chief Nursing Officer, Tracey Brigstock.

💬 Consultant Steven Laird, who attended the celebration said,
"Reaching 50 is a celebration but 50 years of service in the NHS, that’s impressive.
"This is an inspiration for all those workers out there whatever industry you are in.”
