Remember I told you about "our" first Boxing Day baby? Well he is called Max, and I can officially share his parents story with you now:

From Dad Matt:
Hello all, we thought you might like to know that on December 26th (starting at 4.15am - with a period-type ache - and 'concluding' at 11.54am) Nancy (the super preggers one from the class) gave birth to a baby boy at Leicester Royal Infirmary's Midwife-led Birth Centre.

The key detail I want to get across is that the labour was actually enjoyable. No, really, it was.

Nancy was calm, focused and measured throughout. Pain relief was never mentioned by the midwife and we/she subsequently did not use or (I'm pretty sure) ever consider it.

Our son was born about 45mins later and weighed in at an impressive 9lb 11oz. Not a small baby!

(Follow up email from Nancy)
Ps. I was 8cm dilated (had no idea ... Just breathing through) and hospital were planning to send me home as I was so calm until a doctor checked me out and discovered I was very close to having our baby! LRI midwife was amazing - paid total attention to birth plan, minimum chat and interference just checking baby heartbeat every 15 mins.

What a great story, Its good to hear it also from the fathers perspective - Congratulations Nancy and Matt and welcome to the world little Max.

I have just rolled around the floor in laughter - I mean, what???????? Any other thoughts than hysterical laughter?

Any other thoughts than hysterical laughter?

Over the years, studies have shown music listened to during pregnancy may have a positive effect on babies after they are born. Some believe that auditory fetal learning can later help with a child’s memory skills and brain development. A recent study from Barcelona gynecology clinic Institut Marquè…

“If there was a pill that could be given to pregnant and labouring women that decreased the risk of
late miscarriage, low birth weight, prematurity, and maternal infection, increased their chance of
successfully breastfeeding their baby, and of completing labour and birth without experiencing an
episiotomy, caesarean section, haemorrhage, while saving the NHS money, and without excess risk to
the baby (except at a very low level and in very specific circumstances)… I am fairly sure that doctors,
midwives, and health service providers would be clamouring for women to have the opportunity to
have that drug, and, indeed, insisting that it is unethical to withhold it.
These are the kinds of outcomes associated with booking for home birth during pregnancy. So does it
suddenly become less effective, less ethical as a treatment, because it is a way of doing birth, and not
a drug? Surely not. All health professionals, actively or by inference, sign up to the philosophy of ‘first
do no harm’. The opposite way of reading the data above is that healthy women and babies who
would choose the model of care associated with booking for a home birth but who are denied it are
being exposed to excess harm. How is this defensible in the light of the Hippocratic Oath? It is long
past time for us move on from outdated beliefs about place of birth, and to embrace the formal and
informal evidence that choice of place of birth is a moral and ethical imperative.” (Professor Soo Downe OBE, Midwife and Chair of the UK Royal College of Midwives)

13 risks you didn’t know about Epidurals. Many women think there are just 3 forms of pain relief – Gas & Air, Pethine and Epidural. I have noted that many women wished to stay away from Pethidine due to the drug transferring across to the baby, which reduces their choice to two. However you may …

A great testimonal on Amazon regarding the Hypnobirthing classes:

"I absolutely love this book. Everybody should know about hypnobirthing techniques! We signed up to take a 1 day Mindful Mamma hypnobirthing class & we were sent the book to read in advance of the class.
My partner & I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the book & attending the class itself. Spending the day focusing on preparing for the arrival of our baby was lovely. By helping us to understand the physiological side of birth & the importance of oxytocin has been really valuable. The techniques provided in the class (also covered in the book) have given us confidence to practice them & be excited about the birth of our 1st baby. It's been so helpful to have the resources to share with my partner so he understands it too. I have no doubt we will have a great birth experience & I know the book & the class will have been worth its' weight in gold! smile emoticon Thank you to Sophie & her team of Mindful Mamma practitioners!"
