Catch-up clinics are being held for teenagers and young adults who have not had an important meningitis vaccination.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is holding walk-in clinics for young people in Year 9 and up to the age of 25 who have previously missed their MenACWY vaccination appointment.

Walk-in clinics are being held every Saturday (starting March 21) until further notice at the following locations:
- Barry Hospital, Colcot Road, CF62 8YH (9am-4.30pm)
- Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9PN (9am-4.30pm)

Young people aged 13-14 (school Year 9) are invited by GPs in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to receive this vaccine as part of their routine schedule but sometimes these appointments can get missed.

The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal disease type A, C, W and Y.

While rare, meningococcal disease can be very serious and require urgent hospital treatment. It can lead to life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, brain damage and scars.

If parents of younger children would like information about their meningitis B and pneumococcal vaccination status - both of which are given to children as part of their routine vaccination schedule up to the age of 2 - please call the vaccination service on 02921 841234 (lines open Mon-Fri 9am-4.45pm). You can also book any missed doses with your GP.

Community Pharmacies such as ours are under huge financial pressure at the moment. We love what we do and try very hard to mask those pressures from our patients. We’ve expanded our private and NHS offerings, invested in training, technology & new consultation spaces, we’re doing what we can to adapt to the challenges our sector faces.

We’re hoping to raise awareness about the good work community Pharmacy as a whole does, not only dispensing medicines but also in offering NHS advice & treatment for minor ailments.

If you have empathy with the message the chairman of the ‘National Pharmacy Association’ expressed on SKY NEWS this morning please reach out to your local AM to help us push for fair funding. We’d love for patients who’ve had positive encounters with our Independent Prescribers to share their experiences to help demonstrate the benefit additional investment in the sector would bring.

Unlike GP’s, Dentists & Opticians, Pharmacies don’t qualify for business rate exemption. Rising NI and wages will all take their toll. Drug shortages are a huge problem at the moment, with Pharmacy’s forced to dispense many medications at a financial loss. We’d like to highlight the plight of Community Pharmacies in a way that’s constructive and promote the argument for fair funding and positive change.
