🐾 What Causes Osteoarthritis in Dogs? 🐾

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint conditions in dogs, especially as they get older. It’s a degenerative disease that leads to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility—but what actually causes it?

Here are the main contributors:

🔹 Age & Wear and Tear
As dogs age, the cartilage that cushions their joints naturally breaks down over time.

🔹 Injuries
Past injuries—like ligament tears or fractures—can lead to joint instability and eventually arthritis.

🔹 Genetics
Some breeds are more prone to joint issues, especially larger dogs like Labradors, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers.

🔹 Obesity
Extra weight puts added stress on joints, speeding up cartilage breakdown.

🔹 Joint Abnormalities
Conditions like hip or elbow dysplasia can cause uneven joint wear, leading to OA.

🔹 Overuse or High Activity Levels
Repeated stress on joints (especially in working or highly active dogs) can contribute over time.

🐶 Your dog depends on you to keep them moving comfortably—stay informed and proactive!

🐾 So what is Osteoarthritis? 🐾

Osteoarthritis is a long-term (chronic) condition that affects a dog’s joints. It develops when the protective cartilage inside a joint gradually wears away over time.

Cartilage acts like a smooth cushion between bones, allowing joints to move smoothly and comfortably. As this cartilage breaks down, the joint becomes less stable and more irritated. The body responds to this damage with inflammation, which is part of the natural repair process—but in osteoarthritis, this inflammation becomes ongoing and can actually contribute to further joint damage and discomfort.

Over time, the body may also try to stabilise the joint by producing extra bone growth around it. These bony changes are called osteophytes (sometimes known as bone spurs). While this is the body’s attempt to protect the joint, osteophytes can make the joint stiffer and reduce normal movement.

Because of these changes—cartilage loss, inflammation, and new bone formation—osteoarthritis is considered a degenerative condition, meaning it gradually progresses over time.

It can affect any joint in the body, but is most commonly seen in the hips, knees, elbows, and spine. Although more common in older dogs, it can occur at any age, particularly if there has been injury or underlying joint issues.

In upcoming posts, we’ll explore the signs to look out for and how osteoarthritis can be managed to keep dogs as comfortable as possible

Spring is here, which means longer days, better weather, and more adventurous walks with our dogs 🌿🐾

But with those bigger walks comes a higher risk of dogs wandering further than usual — whether they catch an exciting scent, get spooked, or simply lose their bearings in unfamiliar surroundings.

That’s why microchipping is so important. If your dog gets lost, a registered microchip gives them the best chance of being quickly identified and reunited with you.

Ensure your dog has a correctly fitted collar with correct details on it as well!!

It’s also worth considering using a GPS tracker on your dog’s collar. These devices allow you to see your dog’s location in real time, giving you extra peace of mind on those longer spring outings.

Before heading out, make sure:
✔ Your dog’s microchip details are up to date
✔ Your contact information is correct
✔ You’re prepared for longer, more exploratory walks

A little preparation can make all the difference in keeping your dog safe this season 💛

🌸🐾 Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Your Dog’s Safety! 🐾🌸

When we freshen up our homes in spring, it’s easy to overlook how some cleaning habits can affect our four leggeds! Here are a few quick tips to keep your dog safe while you scrub and shine:

🧴 Watch those chemicals – Many cleaning products contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs and pets. Opt for pet-safe cleaners whenever possible, and always store products out of reach.

🚪 Ventilate your space – Strong fumes can irritate your dog’s nose, lungs and skin. Open windows and keep rooms well-ventilated while cleaning.

🐕 Create a safe zone – Keep your dog in a separate room or outside while you clean to prevent accidents with wet floors or spilled products.

🧺 Be mindful of small items – Things like dryer sheets, sponges, or paper towels can become choking hazards if your dog gets curious.

🌼 Check your plants – Adding new houseplants? Make sure they’re non-toxic to dogs before bringing them home.

Spring is all about fresh starts—let’s make it safe and happy for every member of the family, including the four-legged ones! 💚🐶

Spring is beautiful… unless you’re a dog with allergies 😩🌸🐶

If your dog has been extra itchy, licking their paws nonstop, or dealing with red skin lately, it might not just be the weather—it could be spring allergies. Just like us, dogs can react to pollen, dust, grass, and all the things blooming right now.

A few things that can help:
• Wiping paws after walks
• Regular baths to remove allergens
• Keeping bedding clean
• Checking with your vet if symptoms get worse

Don’t ignore the signs—your furry friend deserves to enjoy spring too 💛

Anyone else dealing with a scratchy dog this season?

Spring is beautiful… but if you’ve got a dog with allergies, it can also be a tough season 🌼🐾

Just a reminder to fellow dog parents:
• Pollen isn’t just a problem for us — it can make our pups itchy, sneezy, and uncomfortable
• Watch for signs like excessive scratching, licking paws, red skin, or watery eyes
• Wiping your dog’s paws after walks and keeping their bedding clean can really help
• And if things seem bad, don’t wait — a quick chat with your vet can make all the difference

Let’s keep our furry friends happy and comfortable this spring 💛

Anyone else dealing with seasonal allergies in their dog right now?
