The Vale Osteopath

The Vale Osteopath Vale Osteopath offering an integrated rehabilitation service, and sports massage

Osteopathy focuses on the musculo-skeletal system (the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue) and the way in which this inter-relates with the body as a whole. It combines scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology and clinical methods of investigation. Osteopaths diagnose and treat faults which occur because of injury, stress or perhaps disease, to enable the musculo-skeletal system to work as efficiently as possible, allowing the body to restore itself to normal function. A caring approach and attention to the individual is considered particularly important. After treatment, an osteopath can advise on maintaining a realistic level of health and avoiding those things which might be damaging. For example, remedial exercises to adjust posture or advice on diet and lifestyle can be given. Osteopathy is a fully regulated profession which means that only practitioners who have been properly trained and are able to show that they have been in a safe and competent practice, are allowed onto the register and must abide by a strict code of ethics and practice.

POSTURE DURING LOCKDOWN

The lockdown has forced us into even more sedentary lifestyle than office work. Without the daily commute to work/school we have become increasingly inactive. Even children have started to complain of back, shoulders and neck pain – the prerogative usually reserved for their parents!

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY BAD POSTURE

Poor posture can impact our health in a variety of ways:

Back, shoulders and neck pain.

Headaches and jaw pain caused by moving your head forward and clenching facial muscles.

Constricted chest and poor breathing mechanics, reducing oxygen levels in the blood.

Harvard Medical School also warns of three unusual problems linked to poor posture:

Heartburn and slowed digestion. "Slouching puts pressure on the abdomen, which can force stomach acid in the wrong direction," explains Dr. Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital.

Constipation. Poor posture on a toilet (hunched over with your knees lower than your hips) can promote constipation. Constipation means fewer than three bowel movements per week; hard, dry stools; straining to move the bowels; and a sense of an incomplete evacuation.

Incontinence (leaking a little urine when laughing or coughing). Slouching increases pressure on the bladder and decreases the strength of the pelvic muscles.

IMPROVING YOUR POSTURE

Changing your posture may take some time and practice, but with our help you will see some positive results within a short time.

If you’re working from home, its also important to make sure your workspace is set up well:
Can your 'working from home set-up be improved?
Can your 'working from home set-up be improved?

screen at eye level (think about investing in a laptop stand from Amazon)

support behind your lower back (try a rolled up towel)

elbows and knees at 90 degree angles

feet flat on the floor

forearms and wrist supported

HOME EXERCISES DURING LOCKDOWN

Physical activity is essential to maintaining a healthy body, mind and spirit, especially during stressful situations. Devoting at least 5-10 minutes a day to quick exercises at home is the best way to maintain physical and psychological well-being during the lockdown period.

Feel free to contact me for any help or advice. 😊 (please share with family and friends)

Choose one or two exercises from the table below to do at home every day. Alternate the exercises during a week. Once you complete all 10 exercises, enjoy your weekend and a well-deserved glass of wine (no wine/Netflix is allowed without completing the exercises ☺)

Why is Good "Core Stability" Important?
"Core Stability" is your body’s ability to dynamically control and support your spine via specific muscles.

Your spine is an inherently unstable area of your body. Your lower back has five vertebrae that allow twisting, bending and arching with no other bones to assist. They sit on top of a triangular bone called the sacrum, which wedges itself into the pelvis. Unfortunately, without muscular support, all of these bones would fall in a heap on the ground.

What are the Benefits of Core Stability Training?
Researchers have shown that the correct use of your core stability muscles not only prevents pain but also alleviates pain if you're already suffering. In addition, your body's strength, power, endurance and performance will also improve. You'll be able to run faster, jump higher and even throw further when these muscles work
