This is an analogy I use regularly with my 1:1 chronic pain clients.
Pain isn’t your body failing or breaking down.
Sometimes pain comes after tissue damage… And sometimes, pain persists long after the tissue damage has healed and repaired.
This doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real.
This does NOT mean the pain is “all in your head”.
Here, It’s your nervous system trying to protect you - like an overprotective mum who learned, at some point, that things weren’t safe.
The intention is good.
The protection just hasn’t learned when it’s okay to soften again.
Whether your pain has been around for years, or it’s followed a more recent injury, understanding why your body is responding this way is often the first step towards change.
If you’ve been living with pain - chronic or recent - and you’re ready to gently take hold of it in 2026, you can book an initial physiotherapy consultation with us at Cowbridge Physiotherapy who finds home within Soul & Soma 🤍
