The Therapeutic Gardener CIC

The Therapeutic Gardener CIC Herbalist, organic gardener and holistic therapist sharing my knowledge through workshops and talks💗

my name is Sarah Watson, I am 42 years old and have two children and two grandchildren. I come from an artistic and creative family and was greatly influenced by my mother who is a gardener and upholsterer with a background in art. My father was a very intelligent man speaking several languages and had a deep understanding and knowledge of ancient history and culture with a philosophical and questioning mind. I took on a job as a kitchen assistant as a teenager and quickly moved up the ladder becoming second chef and later running a small weekly market, catering for large events and buffets. I have a passion for food which led me to discover the importance and use of herbs culinary and medicinally. I began my studies as a herbalist from age 23 achieving an advanced diploma as well as a Hatha yoga teaching diploma and adv reflexology dip. I love to talk about and share my findings with these ancient techniques and apply my knowledge to help people and the environment we live in. I am now studying the therapeutic affects of our natural environment and the positive affects it has on our well being. I feel privileged to be able to share this ancient knowledge which enables us to have a better understanding of how we can help ourselves and others and hopefully pass onto the next generations to come as common knowledge, so please join me on my path of discovery where I will be recording the development of my progress and see what insights you may glean and share with me.

What an incredibly productive start to the year! I’ve definitely found myself I feel so blessed to have been given some fantastic growing spaces this year with the beautiful Ridge farm studios, the fantastic allotment space I’ve been allocated and a couple of wonderful new friends I’m hoping to be collaborating with this year!
Every year I like to try new things, learn new skills and really push my creative urges to direct all that positive energy to flow. Taking cuttings and growing plants from seed are a really joyful thing to do. It can be a very symbolic process that has an energetic knock on effect of germination of ideas and projects, growth, nurturing and commitment and of course not forgetting sharing.
I’m reminded of the importance of exercising certain creative urges when I’ve been working with the two ends of the scale as the brain and physical development processes as young children and as the mental and physical muscles breakdown when we’re older. Either way it’s important!

You know when spring has arrived when you’re using up last year’s foraging finds from the freezer.
Mmmm steak and wild mushroom pie😋
You probably know by now how crazy I am about wild mushrooms! Last year I found the find of a century, one I’d been wanting to find for several years and oh boy did I find a beauty last year😄
This wonderful huge hen of the woods has lasted us all winter and froze incredibly well raw! Using up some of our firm favourites the golden chanterelles too which I lightly cooked with butter before freezing.
Mushrooms are soo incredibly nutritious and such a gift from nature.

I’m soo excited with the new opportunities and abundance in my life right now. When your intentions are clear and you focus on your intent the universe supports you. After a long wait I finally have my own beautiful space to grow herbs, flowers and vegetables for myself but also as a space where I can offer small groups for therapeutic gardening sessions. It’s a fantastic plot with lots of raised beds and clear level paths brimming with potential. It’s got a bit of preparation and a few repairs but really it’s a wonderful blank canvas. Just putting together a plan and I’ll be away☺️🌸
Busy weaving some Beautiful woven willow obelisks with my lovely friend Sally from Sally’s Smallholding just to keep my crafting skills in practice and to stimulate my creative juices. This year we’ve also taken a chance on a small hazel coppice for some produce which has prided us with bean poles, pea sticks and weaving rods. Here’s to a creative 2025🌱🪵🌻🥗

What a lovely surprise when I arrived at the garden centre to see there was a half price sale on the seeds!! Soo glad I managed to get them before the weekend rush🤸‍♀️
It’s such an exciting time of year full of new adventures and ideas. The beautiful sunshine definitely helped me feel more positive and uplifted too.
So I’ve bought some more hanging basket/pot plants to bring on for a client as I’m soo pleased how fast they’re growing. I even decided to take a cutting from one of the petunias purchased a few weeks ago.
I’ve potted on my new plug plants into a mixture of composts and watered in with tepid water to help them relax. The underfloor heating is working wonders with the germination too! My asters only took 2 days🫣

Each year I’m drawn to work with different plants and this year I’m carrying on my interests with Aster as I feel there’s more for me to discover. Zinnia jumped out to me too this year so I was delighted to discover its therapeutic qualities 😀. Really looking forward to working with the energy of flowers this year and listening to my inner guidance more💖

Cucumber seeds are ready to pot up now after a very quick germination. My loofah’s are ready to pot up today too so just to find a bright place for them to grow indoors. Cayenne Peppers are growing well too now they’re in soil💕
Taking advantage of a beautiful sunny day I got to plant out a garden with lots of lovely grasses and lilies and spent some time potting on more grasses and ferns for planting out in the spring once I’ve helped them along a bit first.

Next stage ready on the construction of this fun little structure 😀. There hasn’t been a great rush to get it done and waiting for more weaving materials has slowed it down slightly but it’s really taking shape now!! Membrane down and ready for the bark and trimmed the scruffy sides this week. Some creative weaving next to give it a real artistic element. We’ve got some fantastic vines to tie into it so it’s going to look and smell heavenly come the summer💖

I love to try different methods every year germinating seeds. This method is a great way to get your seeds going of pretty much any seed. It’s a really fun way to do it with kids too as they can see every little stage of growth.
I loooove growing cucumbers! These little short varieties are fantastic as you get a high yield and they’re ready to harvest really quickly due to their size. The smell of fresh cucumber is heavenly fresh and there’s nothing quite like it in the summer.

Not only are they a great source of vitamin B. Thiamine aids normal functioning of the heart and the vitamin C aids strength and flexibility to our blood vessels. B vitamins have been shown to reduce stress levels in the body. Cucumbers have been shown to reduce inflammation in the body, is a useful digestive aid, keep the body alkaline aiding prevention of colds and flu, has a silica content high enough to aid elimination of aluminium from the body. It’s also been show to aid brain function due to it’s anti inflammatory flavonoid fisetin helping to protect against cognitive decline and memory loss.
I’m looking forward to making some wonderful juices this summer that’s for sure 💖

🌱place seeds of choice on the tissue apart so they’re not touching.
🌱cover with cling film

Taking advantage of my underfloor heating getting my seeds going early😄. I love growing chilli peppers for soo many reasons. It’s soo exciting to see this years seeds sprouting already! It almost felt like spring a couple of weeks ago I just couldn’t help myself. Hopefully this year my loofa plants will have a long enough growing period to produce some loofas that I can actually harvest🤞

I’ve got that little itch to get sowing and propagating again. It’s such an incredibly satisfying process to produce plants from seed and my desire to grow this year seems stronger than ever💖

I love this time of year! It’s such a joy to harvest roots and make incredible therapeutic products for the year to come to give as gifts or stock up your home apothecary. It’s a skill we should share and enjoy as a common knowledge craft for self help.

Every year I like to make a sage tincture which I use as an invaluable home medicine cupboard item. It’s fantastic for oral health and helps relieve and rid mouth ulcers, it’s a great remedy for abscesses in the mouth and gingivitis amongst other things. There’s so many different things we can do with the rosehip I like to make different things every year. I normally make rosehip syrup but with the scarcity this year here I decided to make an oil to nourish and revive tired, menopausal skin prone to thinning, patchy areas.
