I'm an advocate for weight based strength and conditioning, so why have I co-founded a running club? 🏃♂️🏃♀️
Just to clarify my brouder viewpoint, every modality of exercise has its benefits. I still believe strength training should be prioritised, but running, specifically in a group can add real value to your life. 🙌
What it is, and isn't-
Running alone will not make you stronger, or lose weight (although it can help). Running WILL make you fitter, faster, and healthier.
That being said, the greatest benefits of running in a group for many, is how it can enhance your life and mental health.
Physically, you can improve your cardiac health. Being fitter makes everyday activities that would normally get you out of breath feel easier. You'll improve energy levels, cognitive and hormonal effects, on a physiological level.
You have one body. It's your vestle that you'll live in for the rest of your life, so look after it.
Mentally, group running is often about taking an aspect of your life that you can control, and making it better. It's a focus on progress, doing something good. When life feels like it's getting to you, you can still control and improve something.
Group running makes you realise that you are in a shared position. You fould be the fastest or the slowest, the newest or the most experienced, but you all have a common goal.
Since starting a local running group in Kirkbymoorside, we've seen people hitting PBs, mentally switching from "I can't do that" to "that's a challenge I can take on". Friends have been made, community developed. Positive life choices have taken centre stage, and been a conscious decision.
THAT is why I run 🏃♂️ 💪
