Exam Results - supporting your child

As a parent or guardian, you may feel disappointed and upset for your child, and that's ok! Communicate this with them - whilst you are disappointed for them, you are not disappointed in them.

Communication is so important. Let them know they can talk about their feelings, acknowledge them, and reassure them.

Look for signs that they aren't coping - they may appear stressed, distant or just not seem themselves.

Summer Anxiety

August is here bringing the heat.
Just like the colder, darker months can effect our mood, so too can the summer. The increase in temperature induces symptoms that are very similar to anxiety and panic. These include:

☀️ sweating
☀️ tiredness
☀️ nausea
☀️ dehydration
☀️ restlessness
☀️ palpitations
☀️ shortness of breath
☀️ feeling hot and flushed.

Add in the people around you having fun in the sun you can fill pressured to enjoy it.

I have to confess I am very much an Autumn/Winter person and summer anxiety is something I get.

Here are some tips to help ease the anxiety:

❤️ keep your body cool -light coloured, loose clothes❤️ drink plenty of water
❤️ have a fan in your room
❤️ keep in the shade when you can
❤️ avoid being out in the hottest parts of the day
❤️ when out and about take a bottle of water, cap, fan and sunglasses.

Heatwave Plan

Do you have a heatwave plan? Heat can have an impact on physical but it can also effect your mental health.

The physical symptoms you experience in the heat can mimic an anxiety or panic attack.

Here's a few ways to keep cool and calm:

💙 If you feel yourself getting hot and panicky, remove yourself from the area and seek shade.

💙 Keep hydrated - this is so important. Water is the best, but you can also add a splash of squash. Aim for 10 big gulps every 15 minutes when out and about.

💙 Wear loose fitting, light clothing.

💙 Avoid physical activity - so no P.E or running around at break time.

💙 Use cold water or an ice pack on your pulse points - wrist, ankles, back of knees or crook of your elbow. Do this for 20 minutes at a time.

💙 Put a packet of wipes in the fridge. Use these on your face and neck to cool down.

💙 If you feel a panic attack coming on, place a few ice cubes into your hands and slow your breathing. This will shift your focus, cool you down and lower your breathing rate.

💙 Sweating is your body's air conditioner.

💙 Focus on what you can control, not what you can't.

💙 And remember if you are outside - SUNCREAM!

Let's talk K-Pop Demon Hunters!

This film covers many key messages for teens and young people:

💜 Self acceptance
💜 Honesty
💜 Empowerment
💜 Friendships
💜 Love
💜 The importance of self-care and rest
💜 Over coming something you feel ashamed of
💜 Being your authentic self.

On a deeper level it shows how past trauma/hurt/shame creates vulnerability that could be manipulated by others.

The take away message is - You're not alone 💜⚡️✨

5 years! 🥳

5 years ago today, The Mindful Moon UK was born.
The pandemic had hit children hard, and I realised that there weren't many services available to children and young people when it came to mental health.

I'm currently reaching the end of my Masters, beavering away to get it down just in time for back to school season. There's lots of plans in the pipeline, watch this space. I will continue to run seasons for the Beyond charity (as long as they'll have me). I really love what I do x

So today we celebrate 🎂

Thank you for all the support ❤️

Here's to the next 5 years!

Sending love ❤️

Storm stress and anxiety ⛈️ 🌩 ⚡️

Many children, young people and adults will experience storm anxiety or worry. Here are a few tips to ease the anxiety:

💡 Prepare what you can. Have a plan for shelter or evacuation. Make sure you have charged up all your devices, know where the candles, torches and batteries are. Planning and preparation is something we can control in this situation.

💡 Learn about storms. Understanding the science behind them is a great way to calm anxiety and you can give your brain the information it is missing - it doesn't give it a chance to make up it's own answers. We want FACTS not thoughts.

💡Figure out what makes you anxious? Is it thunder? Try noise cancelling headphones or turning up some music.

💡 Choose your information sources CAREFULLY. Whilst social media is great, is it really reliable for information? Information direct from the Met Office and other direct weather services is best.

💡 Work out how you will keep in contact with family and friends - mobile networks down? Use the landline or the internet to keep in touch.

💡 Track your storm. Often it's the waiting and the unknown that fuels our anxiety, so tracking the storm will ease this.

💡 Look for the beauty in it. Often we miss mother natures best work during storms. This could be a rainbow, the sunbeams through the clouds or the way the leaves spin through the air.

Stay safe. Stay weather aware.
