When your body truly relaxes, your nervous system shifts out of “fight or flight” and into a healing state. Muscles soften, breathing slows, circulation improves, and pain signals quieten. This is where hands-on treatment becomes more effective and longer-lasting.

In physiotherapy and massage, deep relaxation allows:
• Reduced muscle guarding and tension
• Improved mobility and flexibility
• Better response to manual techniques
• Decreased stress and pain sensitivity
• Faster recovery and improved sleep

Healing happens when the body is supported, not rushed.

Top Tips for Caring for Arthritic Dogs During the Colder Months ❄️🐾

❄️ Keep them warm
Lower temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, reducing blood flow and circulation to the joints, increasing stiffness and discomfort. Consider using a well-fitting coat and provide soft, supportive beds positioned in warmer areas of the house.

❄️ Dry them thoroughly
Wet fur increases heat loss and can worsen joint stiffness and pain sensitivity. Always dry your dog well after walks or time outdoors.

❄️ Adapt exercise when conditions are poor
If it’s too cold, there’s a risk of slipping, or your dog is reluctant to walk, consider enrichment activities instead. There are many at-home games that promote gentle joint range of motion while also providing mental stimulation.

❄️ Monitor clinical signs closely
Cold weather can worsen pain and reduce mobility. Keep an eye on any changes and act early with a consistent, multimodal management plan.

Stay safe and have fun!! ❄️ ⛄️

Why is your home exercise plan so important?

◽️Prevents the Muscle from Returning to Protective Tightness
After therapy, the nervous system may still “remember” the old movement pattern. If you don’t keep moving and stretching it, the muscle can creep back into a shortened and guarded tone within days.

▫️Maintains the New Range of Motion
Physiotherapy temporarily increases flexibility and mobility of joints and fascia. Continuation of tailored exercises and stretches cements this gain by reminding the body what that new range feels like and keeping tissues lengthened.

▫️Retrains the Nervous System
Provides proprioceptive feedback → the brain learns that the new lengthened, relaxed state is safe. Prevents the nervous system from “resetting” to the old, tight baseline.

▫️Balances Compensation Patterns
If one muscle group was tight, others may have been over- or under-working to compensate. Regular stretching and engagement keeps the whole kinetic chain mobile while the horse relearns correct, balanced movement.

✨Client spotlight ✨

A huge well done to Danni Dunn Eventing and Muffin for absolutely smashing their first 3* at ⭐️ Muffin is proving himself to be a real superstar and I feel so lucky to support him on his way 💪🏼

As we approach the end of the season, now’s a good time to get those maintenance sessions booked in. Giving your horses the best chance to rest, reset and rebalance correctly and symmetrically 🐴
