This recent study of frontline healthcare workers in the UK demonstrated that it’s possible to carry out scientific, high quality research in this area. This research paves the way for future studies, which are what the scientific community are calling for before they will accept that Reiki is a valid therapy. So lots of cause for celebration but still a long way to go!

I’m proud to be a practitioner involved with Reiki Medic-Care, a not-for-profit which has not only conducted this research, but delivered hundreds of Reiki sessions to stressed out nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals.

You can help by telling people about how Reiki has benefitted you!

The Center for Reiki Research and Reiki Medic-Care's distant Reiki study with healthcare workers in the UK has now been published!

Busy day ahead? Don’t forget to take regular breaks. Just a few moments away from your screen to get some fresh air, some water, have a chat can help you to have a mini reset!

Now that I’m working full time again, I’ve noticed that I’m not very mindful about my own wellbeing during the working day, so I’m consciously trying to build in a few more short breaks.

What do you like to do or need to do during your breaks?

It's Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere, the longest day, the shortest night and the start of astronomical summer.

It's a time to celebrate the yang, masculine energy of the Sun, to be active, get things done and make the most of life!

If your energy levels are low, try to spend some time outside, laying down with your solar plexus exposed to the sun for a few minutes. Consciously focus your energy there and affirm "I am confident, I am in my personal power, I radiate vitality" 🌞

I’ve recently taken on a new role as Centre Manager at the Horsham branch of the Olive Tree Cancer Support Group! We are a small independent charity operating in Crawley and Horsham to provide information and support services to people affected by cancer, whether patients or loved ones. We are reliant on goodwill of volunteers and on charitable donations to keep our services available to those who need it most. Some of the things we offer are:
💚Access and signposting to relevant information about cancer and its financial, emotional and physical impact. 💚Counselling 💚Complementary therapy (yoga, massage, reflexology, hypnotherapy, cranio-sacral therapy, Bowen, Reiki) 💚Social support groups (drop ins, Knit & Natter)
💚Group talks and workshops. All this is provided by voluntary donation - our therapists and counsellors are all volunteers! If you have any ideas for how we can raise awareness of our services in the community, then please get in touch!
P.S I am still taking private bookings for Reiki in the evenings and weekends 💜

I’ve recently started a new role as Centre Manager at the Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre in Horsham. The Olive Tree is a small independent local charity that supports people affected by cancer and their loved ones through information, social support, counselling and complementary therapies to promote relaxation. All of our services are offered on a donation basis and we are reliant on counselling and complementary health professionals to volunteer their time. Please do get in touch/share if you have or someone you know has the qualifications, skills and experience to support cancer patients and their families and friends. Thank you 💚

💚 OPPORTUNITY 💚

We are looking for volunteer complementary therapists to join our friendly team at both of our Centres, in Horsham & Crawley.

Candidates would need to have a recognised qualification, ideally be a member of a governing body, such as the FHT, or CNCH. They would need to be willing and able to commit to dedicating 2-3 hrs per week or fortnight, to add to our existing services.

We would never expect any of our volunteers to be out of pocket, so expenses such as car parking and traveling costs would be reimbursed.

We are specifically looking for, massage therapists, including oncology massage, reflexologists, acupuncturists, and Indian head massage and Reiki practitioners.

Here is what one of our current volunteers has to say about their experience:

‘Volunteering with the Olive Tree is incredibly rewarding, and I would absolutely encourage any therapists to be involved.’
Jessica Hurley - Natural Face Lift Therapist

👉What is Bowen?

Developed by Australian masseur Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916 – 82), the Bowen technique is a hands-on therapy that gently manipulates muscles and connective tissues (fascia) in order for the body to reset itself and restore alignment, particularly to the spine. A relatively new therapy, Bowen was introduced to the UK in the 1990s.

👉What happens in a session?

During a treatment the therapist will hold and then stretch the muscles/fascia, using small, precise movements, which is believed to result in signals passing between the brain and muscle to restore balance. The therapist will leave the room between moves to allow the healing process to take effect.

👉Who is it for?

Bowen is intended for use alongside medical diagnosis and treatment and may be suitable for people experiencing a diverse range of conditions, including in palliative care, because of its gentle nature. It is used in efforts to reduce pain, increase mobility and improve posture.

Each year the Alzheimer's Society runs Dementia Action Week with the aim to increase awareness of dementia, which is a set of symptoms of nerve cell damage in the brain affecting memory, language, behaviour and problem solving. 900,000 people in the UK are affected and although dementia is typically associated with the over 65s, there are 42,000 under-65s with early-onset dementia. This year the focus is on improving diagnosis experiences, after research showed that there are barriers to getting a timely diagnosis, because of factors such as misunderstanding the nature of memory loss and when to visit the GP, and referral times to specialists being delayed.

Because forgetfulness, getting easily distracted and a reduced ability to multitask are associated with normal ageing, sometimes symptoms of dementia may be dismissed by sufferers and their families. Symptoms of dementia are different to those of normal ageing and there is a useful table you can use to compare possible signs of dementia with normal ageing signs at www.alzheimers.org.uk

Risk factors that are associated with dementia include age - not much we can do about that - but also smoking, drinking alcohol, physical inactivity and an unhealthy diet, so making some lifestyle changes may help to ward off the disease.

From day one of dementia, we'll be right here with you. For support and advice. For pushing for change, and for life-changing treatments and care.
