This is part of why I trained to be a child and adolescent mental health coach. If you would like to book a coaching session for your child/ young person then do get in touch via nicola.pole@virginmedia.com or via messenger on Guiding Hearts and Minds
It's only one day. You've only got six lessons. I don't understand why it's such a big deal...
Ok, so let's just break this down a bit.
You're going to spend today with six different bosses. They all have their own rules and expectations. You need to remember them all. You're going to need six different lots of equipment. You'll need to take these to six different locations. And remember where they all are.
You'll be expected to be silent. But also speak. You'll be expected to sit still. But also run around. You'll be expected to be creative. And also absolutely not because it's done like this. You'll be expected to stop doing stuff. But also immediately start doing stuff. But also not. Dependant upon who your boss is and your location. Which you'll need to remember.
You'll need to remember to drink even if your not thirsty, because you cannot drink when you are. You'll need to remember to go to the toilet when you don't need to because you cannot when you do. You'll need to eat all that up even if your not hungry. But also not eat if you are.
You'll need to navigate complex social situations with your peers and adults, regulate your emotions so as not to get yelled at. Perform at 100% of everyone's expectations. Even if you do you may still have to deal with being a failure. Be authentic. But not like that because it's unacceptable. Comply with all instructions. But also show autonomy. Switch tasks on demand. And also stay on task at all times.
Oh and also remember those random, completely unrelated facts we told you. By heart.
We will change this schedule daily, so try to keep up!
(The last bit is NOT a dig at all teachers, because I am sure some of them have awesome memories. This is a dig at myself. Who doesn't. But was a teacher who had to issue test papers and grade them. Whilst misplacing a board marker a day, forgetting to pack my own lunch and having no recollection of my own phone number or email password. Ironic much?)
