Abstract
Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) is a novel, minimally invasive and useful treatment modality. Its use in complex facial pain has been on the rise, and its utility will further increase with the advances in the technology and renewed interest in the field of peripheral neuromodulation. PENS therapy can be used both as diagnostic and therapeutic option. The precise mechanism of action is not known, although a combination of electrical neuromodulation and release of endogenous morphine- like substance in the central nervous system appears as plausible explanation. We analyse the various studies in the literature and discuss the Southampton data regarding facial pain treatment with PENS therapy. We believe that PENS therapy for facial pain and headache is currently underutilised. It is safe, economical and should certainly be part of the armamentarium in the treatment of complex facial pain and headache. © 2020 S. Karger AG, Basel

The glial cells of the nervous system have been eclipsed in importance by neurons for decades. But glia are turning out to be central to many neurological functions, including pain perception.

It has been an exciting day for all, as Dr's Peter Georgius and Paul Frank treat a patient with Occipital neuralgia at Nambour Selangor Private Hospital in Queensland - the first hospital in Australia to receive our new NeuroStimulator PENS therapy II.

Algotec's NeuroStimulator PENS therapy II peripheral nerve stimulator has been engineered to improve patient outcomes and extend the benefits of PENS therapy to more patients suffering from chronic neuropathic pain syndromes.

We are very excited to announce that our NeuroStimulator PENS therapy II peripheral nerve stimulator, received CE approval last week.

The NeuroStimulator II was used yesterday for the first time at the University Hospital Southampton in the UK, by neurosurgeon Girish Vajramani, to treat one patient with chronic migraine, and another with nummular headache.

Mr Vajramani finished a functional neurosurgery fellowship at the Walton Centre, Liverpool, before joining the University Hospital Southampton to set up a functional neurosurgery service there.

Mr Vajramani has successfully set up the spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal baclofen therapy service, and is currently setting up the deep brain stimulation service for Parkinson’s and other movement disorders. He is the lead neurosurgeon for epilepsy surgery, performing resective surgeries as well as vagus nerve stimulation. His areas of interest include trigeminal neuralgia, complex facial pain and other neurovascular conflict syndromes, such as hemifacial spasm. He is also interested in occipital nerve stimulation for intractable migraines and cluster headaches.

We are very excited to welcome Chine House Equine Hospital, as our 10th equine centre in the UK to start using PENS therapy (EquiPENS), for trigeminal mediated headshaking in horses.

EquiPENS is now also being used in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, and is developing into an exciting deviation from our intended human indications.
