Over 10 years ago I was sat in a one bedroom flat in London, living with a man who made me cry more than he ever made me laugh and wondering how on earth I ended up at this point??

I knew it was decision time, but how on earth do you choose to walk out of your life into the vastness of nothing??

So....

I called a therapist/life coach

Why?

Because sometimes you need to bat stuff about with someone who is NOT in your life!

She had no knowledge of my life. No opinions on it. No expectation.

Which meant I said things I wouldn't normally say and heard them out loud for the first time with no opinion, judgement or 'advice'

Two sessions later I walked out of my life.... through MY choice

Five years later my life is worlds away from that lady...

But I am eternally grateful for investing in my own mental health to get myself on track and start living a happier life

So often, I meet young people who are scared that if they engage with therapy and get better, that people will not believe that they were unwell or struggling in the first place.

As adults, we need to be self-aware of our own commentary around mental health, and not undermine the journey people go through to develop positive mental health.

Why is diagnostic overshadowing an issue?

Read more here ▶️

Whilst traditionally a term used in more medical environments, over recent years the recognition of diagnostic overshadowing has increased. Diagnostic Overshadowing occurs where a child (or adult) symptoms are attributed to their previous diagnosis rather than exploring their cause, meaning or what....

'I'm here if you need me'

'Just let me know if you need me'

'reach out'

Here's the thing; when someone is struggling, they feel like noone would care, they may even feel as though noone cares, they may have previously been told to 'stop being so dramatic' and this will prevent them 'reaching out' - so it's important that we actually show up, turn up and be there for them. It could make all the difference....

Being a therapist is like being an FBI agent (I would love to be on Criminal Minds personally)

BUT here's the serious side of it - when my clients come in and throw all their problems on the floor it's my job to help them sort through them and make a treatment plan to make it all better!

Then WE execute the plan (adapting if necessary) to a point where the issue is resolved and they can get on with their next steps

So whilst the FBI deals with the crime - I deal with the recovery
