Cranial osteopathy is a gentle form of manual therapy that uses subtle, hands-on techniques to assess and treat imbalances in the body's tissues, promoting a state of deep relaxation and facilitating the body's self-healing mechanisms. Developed by William Garner Sutherland, it focuses on the subtle, involuntary movements of the body to release stored stresses and strains, and can be used for a wide range of conditions in people of all ages, including babies, children, and adults.
How it works
Subtle Touch:
Cranial osteopaths use a highly developed sense of touch to "listen" to the body's rhythmic, involuntary motions.
Restoring Balance:
By synchronizing with these movements, they identify and gently support restricted areas, helping them to rebalance and move harmoniously with the whole body.
Non-manipulative:
The techniques are very gentle, involving light pressures and prolonged holds rather than forceful manipulation.
Conditions it can help with:
Cranial osteopathy is often used for babies and young children but is suitable for people of all ages, including:
Babies: Excessive crying, feeding difficulties, colic, wind, and sleep disturbances.
Adults: Headaches, migraines, chronic pain, stress, muscle tension, and back/neck pain.
General: Recurrent infections, persistent coughs, and improving overall well-being.
Key Principles
Whole Body Approach:
While the techniques were developed on the head, they can be applied to any part of the body to address deep patterns of tension.
Facilitating Healing:
The goal is not to "fix" a part of the body but to create conditions where the body's own healing mechanisms can work more effectively.
Gentle and Relaxing:
The treatment encourages deep states of relaxation and is considered a suitable option for vulnerable groups like infants and sensitive adults.
